Well, in the words of that wise Canadian profit; Larry Jensen, that Rootin, Tootin, Putin is at it again.

It's depressing. Without sending troops there's not much we can do to stop the bastard. No one wants to send troops. So we're left with imposing sanctions, which we should and apparently will do. I hope they're painful enough to deter the bastard from doing something like this again.

Take note of that big river dividing the Ukraine North to South. It's called the Dnieper. I expect we will be hearing more about the Dnieper as this all unfolds. (west of, the new, smaller Ukraine; east of, the separatist republics under Russian "protection" waiting for a name)

Grandpa Radtke was born in a German village in Crimea. The Germans were there because Catherine the Great invited them in to settle in order to take Crimea away from nomads who were loyal to Turkey. Grandpa deserted Czar Nicholas' army and came over here. Later Stalin wiped out the remaining Germans because they might be loyal to Germany.
More of the same.

New to me too. But Stalin killed so many people that it's hard to keep track of them all.

Did grandpa Radtke build dioramas for Catherine The Great, or maybe stacked eggs?

Really makes you miss Trump, don't it? Serious question. How do you think Trump would have handled this problem that would have been so much better? Trump seemed to have quite a bromance with Putin. Would Trump have done something to stop Putin? Or, alternatively, would Trump have offered Putin American troops to aid his invasion? (Snark minimized to the best of my ability.)

Or alternatively, Putin may never have sensed the pathetic weakness that is Joe Biden and never have bothered to challenge an energy independent US under Trump. Weakness invites aggression.

My father died before he had a chance to become a grandpa, so the mantle of "Grandpa Radtke" now falls to me. And I love it.
Not to get too far into the weeds here, but Putin has "recognized" the independent sovereignty of two regions in Ukraine. Call them "states" if you want, like here, called Donetsk and Luhansk. (Why do the names sound like a game of Risk?) Picture them as Montana and North Dakota, up against Canada. Back when Putin re-took Crimea, he also moved into part of Ukraine and occupied about a third of the two "states." Again, picture it as Canada occupying the top third of Montana and North Dakota, turning Steve and Paul into Canadians.
But now, since he's recognized both entire regions as free and "independent" People's Republics, that means the remaining two-thirds of each region is now "occupied" by Ukraine. Meaning he can now move into those "occupied" areas for their "defense."
These regions are far short of the Dnieper River that epaul mentioned. But there's an additional wrinkle (of course.) Crimea, despite being a peninsula, is a semi-arid region. For fresh water and irrigation it relies on a canal from the Dnieper River. The Ukraine government cut off access to the canal when Russia Russia Russia took Crimea. Reservoirs have dried up and crops are withering. Russia has to subsidize Crimea with billions of dollars (rubles, whatever) as Crimea dries up.

... Putin has "recognized" the independent sovereignty of two regions ... So, what state(s) would you most like to see recognized as independent by other countries? Florida. Texas. California. Upper michigan. Or, since apparently since breaking up a state to make more states is a hard thing to do, maybe parts of some states should be recognized as independent by other states. (and not just Boulder, that thing about being surrounded by reality)

...Again, picture it as Canada occupying the top third of Montana and North Dakota, turning Steve and Paul into Canadians. ... YIKES! I've heard Canada is even worse than Russia! (but, I've also heard that Hockey Night in Canada is free on cable and you get a Moosehead for every goal a Canadian team scores against a team based in the U.S. (two if it is one of the Florida teams), so, there is that)

Or since the Dnieper is important, maybe Minnesota should be split in two north of the twin cities, along the Mississippi.
