Michale Dunn's instrument-building projects are getting Out There. Here's a demonstration of his new Stroh cello.

I understand Mr. Stroh produced all kinds of weird instruments, fiddles and such mated with remnants of Victrolas.

This one, or the original Strohs? The original ones were invented during the days of acoustic recording, when everything was captured by playing into a horn. Violins are not very "directional," acoustically, so the Stroh was developed to focus the sound so it recorded better. If you've heard a violin on a recording from the 20's, it was likely a Stroh (unless the recording was of a particular soloist). They predate National guitars, which were also an attempt to increase volume. They operate differently, but there are similarities. I got a chance to handle what I think is the only Stroh ukulele when Gryphon took it in from an estate. It wasn't in playable condition, but it was very cool. There was also at least one Stroh Hawaiian (lap-style) guitar, and I once thought of getting a replica made (but too much $$$, and the necessity of funding a builder's trials and errors).
