Yeah - I'd love to find one of those under the Christmas tree.
As a guy that's made a living selling lumber and milling of lumber it's always been interesting that the prices these higher end archtops bring is so much higher than flat tops. Yes they are harder to make but I have a hard time believing they are 15K harder, but I guess I don't really know. I'm guessing that's a simply(and beautifully) adorned 20K+ guitar?

A beautiful instrument for sure, but way more than I would spend on a guitar.

A beautiful instrument for sure, but way more than I would spend on a guitar. Yeah, me too. $19,500 is the absolute most I would spend for a guitar. Still, it warms my heart to think how great that guitar would look stored safely in its case downstairs in my instrument storage area. (It’s a joke, son.)

Real varnish is a time consuming finish as it takes longer to dry and cure. Months compared to a few weeks and now a few days for modern stuff. Once electric compressors and spraying outfits became available makers switched to lacquer and never looked back. Now it's thin, durable and flexible UV cure finishes. But nothing has that warm glow of hand rubbed varnish.

Wow. That guitar costs what a good refrigerator does.

I don't begrudge Collings asking that much for a guitar, nor does it bother me that some folks would spend that much. To some folks, $20K is not much money.
If I had that kind of budget for a guitar, I'd call up Dr. Kennedy and see what we could come up with.

If you have to hand carve the plates an archtop is infinitely more labor intense than a flat top. On the other hand there is not a fixed bridge or extremely narrow parameters for neck angle so that part is easier. I would go out on a limb and say that a laminated archtop with prefabricated plates is a little easier than a flat top.
That guitar is just beautiful in a minimalistic way but no cutaway or electronics. I would guess that the target demographic is really narrow. Well healed collector types? I would think most gigging musicians would want a jazz box with a cutaway and would retro fit electronics.
I mean what the hell, your trophy wife can’t even drive it to yoga.

As I recall, you hand carved the plates on my archtop, pictured in your avatar, and your hands hurt for quite a while afterwards. Thank you once more.

Back twenty some years ago when we all met via the AG Magazine connection, I remember an article that was observing the diminishing difference in guitars as you get more and more expensive. I would say that the difference has diminished even more since then.
What (to my mind, anyway) the difference is now lies in the realm of what most people think of when they use the word "art".
There are few if any who couldn't approximate the sound of that guitar on a cheaper, even import guitar. But that's really beyond the point when you've achieved such aesthetic perfection as Collings has with that guitar.

This reminded me of a really great article on the history of the Jazz guitar that's over on my website written by the Italian guitar maker Fernando Jaen. The History of the Archtop Jazz GuitarI read it again for the first time in years. Still interesting.
