Well, we had ....
Dennis O'Neill (MNHermit) on hand ... and David Hanners (playing the guitar Dennis built) .... and David Radtke ... and Bobb Fantauzzo on Native flutes ... and RoseJam alum Paul Dahlberg, and at least one newbie and some other fine players and singers, as well. A nice night, well attended. I debuted the Martin, which went OK but not great. It was hard to hear -- one of the drawbacks of being the opening act is that the sound system is still being futzed with.
Dennis, I loved the Harry Chapin tune you closed the night with ... "Harry, keep the change" is still ringing in my ears, and that is a good thing!
(Of course, he won't read this until about midnight central time, if at all tonight... as he had a long drive back to the North Woods ... )

Hey, now I can picture the whole thing, having been there. I like that.
I like Dennis' take on Taxi as well.

I'll third with Dennis' take on Taxi. Sounds like a great evening, with great people. How much of an audience do you average there, Bill?

Well, of course, a lot of the people who are in the audience are there to perform and we had nine performers tonight. But I would say there were 20, 25 people in the place most of the night.

That's kind of what I was imagining. 20 to 25 is a nice number, though, isn't it?

Audience size is an interesting topic. I think optimum is 25-50. If there are significantly fewer, it's depressing. Any more and it gets too impersonal.
The connection will elude most, if not all, but I'm reminded of a hunting writer named Jack O'Connor who described shooting a deer at some ungodly range, 400 yards or something. He said it was just like shooting at a target. The fact that there was a living thing in the sights got lost at that range. That's how I've felt on the few occasions where we played for very large audiences.

Hence, the origin of the phrase, " Knock 'em dead."

Sorry I missed Dennis' Taxi. I had to duck a little early to pick up my kids.

Sounds like a great evening and having heard many of them I'd love to have been there to hear them again.
Audience size has some bearing but the venue has something to do with it too. Acoustics can make a difference and how the place is managed makes a huge difference. Try talking while someone is performing at the Bluebird in Nashville and you'll find yourself being encouraged to vacate the premises.
