I am off to Cedar Falls For a braille school camp this week. We’ll have a heat wave in Iowa, although nothing like California and Arizona.

I am off to the coffee pot for a refill. So far, that’s the extent of my plans.

I experienced a power surge in the early hours of last Friday. They sky was clear. No rain. No thunder. No lightening. It just happened. The surge knocked out all power to the house and set off my security system. My phone rang at 12:08am. I couldn’t see and wasn’t sure, at first, what was happening. It was ADT calling to check on me as the alarm was sounding and I hadn’t reacted to turn it off. I didn’t immediately turn it off as I thought there might be an intruder. I told the man from ADT that I didn’t have power and he said that would set off the alarm and most likely was the cause. However, he stayed with me on the phone until I was able to get to the basement to turn the circuts back on and to be sure I didn’t need assistance from the Police.
The power surge box connected to the circut breaker box blew out. I called our electrician who replaced it on Friday. He went through the house to assess the damage. We lost several appliances including the brand new fridge. The one year old AC unit was damaged but was repaired. I have our plumber coming out today to assess if there was any damage to the dual pump with battery back-up system he installed only TWO WEEKS AGO!
I am pissed. Part of the appeal of this house was that it had very NEW and very high end appliances that wouldn’t need to be replaced for many many years... and poof they are gone.
I am even more upset as the power company (WE ENERGIES) is already giving me the run around. Telling me I will “need receipts” to prove the price of lost items and “of course, there is depreciation on these items.” We are going to have to put out thousands of dollars and we just bought this home.
We are not alone. The entire block was hit. My hope is that there is strength in numbers in getting WE ENERGIES to do the right thing.
Feeling a little discouraged this morning.
Have a good day, everyone.

Gonna try to get in a bike ride this morning, before it gets too hot. Gotta make a trip to Cedar Rapids this afternoon.

No bike today, will go out tomorrow (~10 hrs from now), kind the right timing since wednesday will be rainy--so a schedule I like: ride, day off, ride, repeat. I cooked dinner--salads and one of my usual pastas. Wife had her shamisen lesson so after getting back she reheated it and ate about 19:30. A shot from a walk the other day:

Coffee cup full and that’s about it so far. Yesterday’s recoding session went well. We got two songs done. The heat wave continue, so the pool is in the cards for today.

Jan, OMG. So your surge protector didn't do what it was supposed to do? It was supposed to protect your appliances. I am so sorry this happened at what has been a very happy time for you.
Hot here in Tucson. We have been rolling out of bed at 6 AM to get our walk done. Decided we would skip that today and maybe walk the mall later. But our bodies are used to the routine and we were awake shortly after 6. Still not going out there, except I did water the plants. At least it is starting to get monsoony and there's a chance of rain starting on Thursday.

The dreaded Kennedy Guitars team tees off in the United Way Golf Classic in two hours. Wish us luck. Looks to be cloudy with intermittent drizzle and we are good mudders so maybe this is the year.

We have had power blips twice in the last two days. The power goes out for just a few seconds, just enough to shut everything down. This includes DaWife's work computer, really ticks her off as it take a few minutes to get it back up and everything logged in again. It is VERY well protected and there are several login stages.

Jan, that would be frustrating for anyone.
Good morning. I left at 5:30 for a walk in the mountain preserve. I picked a route that kept North Mountain between me and the sun almost the entire time. It was quite comfortable in the shade.
The heat will subside somewhat today. I hope it does for my relatives in Texas. Although our temperatures are higher, the heat index was higher in Dallas yesterday than it was in Phoenix. As Hobson mentioned, we now have a chance of showers later this week. It's been a long time since I saw that in the forecast.
Enjoy your day.

Jan, OMG. So your surge protector didn't do what it was supposed to do? It was supposed to protect your appliances. I am so sorry this happened at what has been a very happy time for you. The electrician said it would have been a lot worse had we not had the surge protector. I did not lose my washer/dryer. My neighbors did. The electrician did install a much larger surge protector and also suggested we put individual surge protection on each circut of the major appliances, i.e., refrigerator, AC etc. Sigh..... The good news is that I did not lose any of my musical electronics nor my art machines and lights. I ALWAYS unplug them when I am finished using them.

Jan, your homeowners policy might cover surge/lightning damage (I know, you've checked, just doing the belt and suspenders thing)
Also, if you can't locate the receipts for the appliances purchased by the previous owners, serial numbers will provide the age and model type and photos will establish ownership/linkage to the surge-attacked house. That should be all that is needed and the electrical provider at first balks, push back hard, photo and serial number will establish all that needs to be established.
(put yourself in some of the photos. Also, frizz up your hair and ink in some scorch marks on your face. Tell the utility people you were standing innocently next to your fridge when their surge jumped out and zapped you. They will be inclined to treat you very nicely.)

We gots us a hot, humid cloudy day. Temps in the mid-80s and a dew point in the mid-60s. I am wilting like an orchid in the desert. An orchid riding am unnamed horse while upside down roots to the heavens.

Weather men lie. Both Ch 9 and Google Weather said I should be able to get in a dry bike ride the morning. I made it 6 mi before I felt the first drops. At 9 mi I put on my rain gear. So, a 26.5 mile ride, 20 miles in the rain.
Edit. Sheep lie too.

It is 90°F here with what AccuWeather calls "Real feel" of 103°F. It will be 96°, 98°, 94°, and 94° tomorrow through Friday and then drop down to 85° Saturday. Wednesday's low will be 79°.
Not scheduling anything outside or even in the garage.
