I've sworn off buying new guitars but I've got a credit balance at Amazon so..............I've had a yen to get a lap slide guitar for a while and the store credit is probably as good an excuse and any to make the plunge. Here are the candidates. For what it's worth my store credit will cover the cost of the two cheapest models. The Gretsch or Royal Hawaiian both look good build wise but they are the most expensive.
You could build a lap steel for fairly cheap from Amazon parts if you have the tools or access to them. I can give you any help you need info wise.
I also have parts sources for lap steels.

So are you tied to something new, and something available on Amazon? I have seen a good review or two regarding SX - Greg B formerly of this forum got an 8-string SX that has proper string spacing (yay!). My guess is Rogue probably has string spacing that is too close together, like a standard 6-string guitar. Preferably string spacing on a 6 would be close to 2". If you see guitars that have regular guitar bridges a lot of times they were built to regular guitar specs at the bridge and nut. Greg B said of his 8-string, which replaced an Artisan, "The Artisian uses a standard electric guitar bridge which not only give too narrow string spacing, but it also makes it really hard to make the string plane perfectly flat. Also, the Artisian has the output jack in the worse possible spot. Right where your hand rests. The SX has 3/8" string spacing and a simple flat bridge which works great." Not sure what the 6-string SX spacing is, but if they did the 8-string right they probably did the 6-string right. I might be getting an SX 8-string. The Eastwood steels look pretty good, but your entry point is $499. I'd hold out for the PRO version, but that's up in the $800's. For an acoustic, I have a Gold Tone that was about $250 when I bought it; it's $599 now. The Imperial is probably OK as well. Even though mine is all laminate, it works just fine for me. But frankly, I would grab just about any of the Oahu acoustic guitars on Reverb that are $500 or less (I might pass on the lowest priced one). I have one like this one that is just wonderful, Aluminum bolt-on pinless bridge, numbers written on the fretboard (I'm surprised the one I linked to below does not have this, since this is a pretty standard feature). reverb.com/item/41620397-oahu-vintage-parlor-slideActually, I would probably buy this one: reverb.com/item/46194716-oahu-66k-square-neck-slide-guitar-1930s-1940sFor acoustic, I have been considering a new PBS-8 (8 string Gold Tone Paul Beard Dobro) or even this Dobro: reverb.com/item/41216446-1938-dobro-8-string-squareneck-norwood-chimes-resonator-guitar-video-customized-ready-to-go

What are you asking for it? And do you take Amazon credits in payment?

What are you asking for it? My plan was to list it for $1900 on the Reverb.com site. If somebody on the forum was interested, I'd sell it for $1500. It's an amazing instrument. Light as feather and it has amazing acoustic volume. The included pickup gives a nice warm tone. It is hand made by the Canadian builder Michael Dunn in 2002.

I've liked all of his Weiss or Knutsen copies I've played. When I lived near Schoenberg guitars they had a few there. I'm surprised you're not asking much more.

Funny you should mention Schoenberg guitars because that is where I got it from. It was a present to myself on my 50th birthday. Once I get the listing created on Reverb I may set the price higher.

I signed in to the forum years ago, but didn't participate much (actually, almost never except my first presentation post), but I lurk regularly. As a french expatriate living in Montreal since 26 years, this forum is (for me anyway) a great information source about american culture.
But I do play the weissenborn (you can have a look at my You Tube channel), and could well be interested in that weiss. I met Michael Dunn a long time ago, and I remember a very deep conversation about guitars (of course). I wasn't even playing lap steel back then. It would be a great honour for me to play one of his instrument.
Now, I'm in Canada... Let me know

Love your Tubes. Used to listen to every one. Love your frequent use of G6 tuning.

Hi Doc ! Did you ever got thru the second part of "Caillou Chou Genou" ? It was long time ago...
As you can see, I since learned myself to play the weissenborn, and I'm quite happy with the result. My present instrument is a beginner one, though. Let's say that a lot of reverb helps much.

After much research I pulled the trigger and ordered this one, It's the least expensive of the ones I've been looking at. Reviews are great, the few negatives I've read are for things like complaining that it can't be played because it didn't come with a cable to plug it in. Guitar Aficionado rates it as the best budget lap steel on the market. So, we'll see. It's supposed to get here Wednesday.

I made my own lap steel. It’s actually quite a trivial exercise, if you have basic wood working skills.

Just a quick update. I got the least expensive option, the SX 6 string. It arrived a few days back. The strings were terrible, there is a small amount of crunchiness when adjusting the pots. Decided to order a set of flat wound medium gage strings to replace the crappy ones. They arrived yesterday and after a night of stretching I tuned up to open G and started messing around with it today.
The crunchy pots are not a big deal for me since the crunchiness is very minor. I can live with them for now, might replace them later. We'll see how learning the instrument goes....... The new strings are great. Everything else on the guitar is in perfect condition. Light on the lap and comfortable to play.
So.........overall, considering that it's $115.00 instrument I'd give it a rating of 9 out of a possible 10. Very good deal at that price point. Glad I got it. Now we'll see how I progress in learning to play it.
