I had a new mattress delivered, and had to get rid of the old one. I don't have a truck but I have an Arcadia, so I tied it to the top with some nylon rope and set off for Garrison. I went to the old Kromer's welding. That place is long since gone but the guy who has the building now has a rural garbage business and a bunch of dumpsters parked in front. He lives in a building on Main Street half a block away, I saw his garage door open so pulled up and got out of the car. Someone who isn't him came out.
"Hello, I thought the guy who has the dumpsters lived here."
"He did. He lives down the street now, I bought this place. He and I are good buddies".
"Well, I've got this mattress tied to the top of my car, and I was going to offer him twenty bucks for me to put it in one of his dumpsters".
He scratched his chin. "You know, I believe he'd be good with that. We're good friends, He's not in town right now but I can handle this for him".
I pulled out a twenty dollar bill, handed it to him, "Thanks. I really appreciate this. Where would he want me to put it"?
He reaches up and taps the mattress, then pushes down on it a bit, takes a pause. "You know, this isn't a bad mattress". Pauses again. "Why don't you just unload it here and I'll take care of it for you".
We chatted for a bit and I helped him carry it into his garage. It looked like it might rain.
Now there is a win-win situation. Apparently delivering a mattress and hauling away the old one has become more complicated these days; my guess being that they don't want a used mattress riding in an enclosed truck with a bunch of new ones. I get that. But I was able to get rid of my old one and rather easily. And some guy I just met in Garrison most likely headed to the Hitchin' Post this afternoon, ordered a beer, and talked about how he scored twenty bucks and a perfectly good mattress all in one day.

So will he use it or sell it on? Or both?

I though that about half way through the story. But getting rid of an old mattress is not as easy here so it's still a win win for you. Did you make him buy you a beer?

Driving with a mattress tied to the roof of your car is kind of a dust bowl vibe. Did you get pictures?

No, I helped him carry the mattress into his garage and then left, no Hitchin' Post involvement from me.

You should have left it in the yard near those old car seats you use as lawn furniture. Once in a while, you might want to lie down instead of sitting.

Todd if you are copying Lj's exterior yard design you'll need a old rusty car on blocks, with the seats out, and a fridge with the door off, gotta keep the kids safe.

In IN, the refrigerators get turned into Morher Mary shrines in the front yard. Classy ones are set into the ground with a stone border and flowers around it.

Every time I've bought a mattress, the delivery guys hauled the old one away for me. Big city living, I guess.

We tried to give away a beautiful oak baby bed one of the granddaughters outgrew. NOBODY would take it, not Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity Restore, a homeless shelter, a battered women's shelter, a kids resale shop, etc.
One place would "consider" taking it if we brought it in and assembled it. Apparently, safety/liability concerns make used cribs worthless unless you find a friend who needs it.
Sadly, it went into my rental dumpster.

All you needed to do was put on the curb with a "For Sale $100" sign, it would be gone the next morning.

Here in Cedar Rapids the city sanitation department will haul nearly anything away. Just put it on the curb and call them to let them know. There will be a nominal charge on your water bill but that’s it. No fuss, no muss. We’ve had them take a whole houseful of rolled up carpet, appliances, computer monitors, mattresses, you name it.

Take it out on a gravel road a mile from anywhere, maybe near a creek bed. Douse it with kerosene. Light it and leave.
