C. has a similar low tolerance for noodling (along with breakneck show-offy soloing). Monkish dissonance and oddball rhythms--no problem. Django's tearaway-but-danceable stuff--just fine. But even some of Zoot Sims' moderately adventurous material has her grumbling. (Zoot with Bucky, however, is another creature altogether.) Russ, my buddy Al and I went to see John Pizzareli at the Dakota. We sat with a guy that dragged his wife along and it was obvious she was in a place she didn’t want to be. Envisioning a long night of dissonance and noodling. Halfway through the first set she was enthralled and by the end of the night she was begging for an encore. There’s one jazz guy that has it figured out eh? Got some recognition by a national retailer yesterday. Walkin tall.

Well, on top of being good-looking, funny, and charming, John P. has a decidedly mainstream, swing-based style--and he sings. I suspect that that last item broadens his audience considerably. (And when he works with his wife, Jessica Molaskey, their cabaret act is absolutely killer.)

I’m glad you are feeling better Phil. The important thing is that you make it to the gigs, and somebody else carries the stuff. On a somewhat related note, I am enjoying the beegeebees out of playing the Eastman MD 515 after the setup!!!
Wow, it is a whole new instrument.

"We're chopping corn for silage and soon the combines will be rolling." I don't read the mail I deliver, but occasionally a word or phrase (like the one above) pops off of a postcard. And I know poetry when I read it. "The frost is on the pumpkin and the hay is in the barn" (James Taylor) I imagine the first (the line from the postcard) could be a line from The Farmer's Hymnal. Late Summer, Early Fall. There's fog most mornings now. Mostly in the low ground. The corn is still there blocking the view, but you can see the mist above the bean and hay fields. The geese are restless, flying from lake to lake, or field to field. And I see wild turkey everywhere -- 8-10 at a time. The flocks of starlings are gathering larger and larger. Yesterday as I rumbled down the gravel road -- 100W at 800S. -- I scared up a flock of probably a thousand. The odd and wonderful thing that happened is that the half of the flock that had been to the left as I approached took off flying to the right. And the half that was to the right (and slightly further away) took off flying to the left. As I kept getting closer and closer, it looked for all the world as though I was driving into a whirlwind of blackbirds.

Wow, Phil. I'm glad you're seemingly OK, and especially glad to know that you happen to live close to what happens to be a pretty good hospital!

A pleasant surprise this morning -- I typically have the Light Classical music channel on my TV when I'm working, as it has no distractions like announcers, but every once in a great while, the audio just goes silent briefly. That happened this morning, so I scrolled down a few channels and discovered one called Singers & Swing, pretty much all Big Band tunes. A nice change of pace, and I'll probably learn a thing or two, as they include little info paragraphs with each screen shot. I've got a pandora "Frank Sinatra" station. Sadly, pandora seems to have a smaller vocabulary of Standards, singers, and big band music than I. On top of that, pandora thinks that MoTown fits in with a Frank Sinatra station. It goes from Stardust to Heard It Through The Grapevine. Alexa, on the other hand, plays lots of things I never heard because when I say "Play big band" she thinks "Tin Pan Alley". Another huge John Pizzarelli fan here. I've been lucky enough to have seen him twice (once up at Michigan State U where he had guest Maurine McGovern who did one number with the sound system turned off in the auditorium. It was an astounding vocal demonstration).

I really like his Thursday live stream because it’s fun to watch him & enjoy the interaction between John & Jessica. He has played some of my requests and even taught me how to play a chord mentioned in his book. Talented guy, to say the least.

Wow, Phil. I'm glad you're seemingly OK, and especially glad to know that you happen to live close to what happens to be a pretty good hospital! First of two follow up visits today. After reading the test results, I am encouraged as to my prognosis. I hope that when I talk with the doctors they don't burst my bubble!

It’s called World on a String. He talks about getting into music, influences, Bucky, etc.

Pizza-relli was at the Fret Board Summit a couple weeks ago. He was the feature on a day when I wasn't there. I was talking to Bruce Roper, the singer/songwriter/Luthier friend when I was there. Bruce is a utilitarian guitar player. He prefers singers over instrumentalists. But he said JP was eye-opening good. "He's the best guitar player I've ever seen."

Had the privilege of seeing Bucky and John together in concert fabulous!! At the same weekend saw Bucky in a small workshop. Engrossing. Light hearted and fun. How superb artistry can be fun for performers and audience.
