Last year I way overdid it on the Halloween candy. Completely misjudged how many bags I would need for Treat or Treaters and ended up eating the last several bags by myself. Fairly quickly. Turned a little green.
I learned a lesson.
And having learned my lesson, this year will be different. You don’t climb a mountain without first going up and down a few hills. You don’t try run a marathon when you’ve been sitting on a couch all year. If you want to do something right, you’ve got to train for it.
So this year, I’m training. I started yesterday with a Snickers and two Kit Kats. Today, I’ll up each by one and add an Oh Henry bar. Saturday, I’ll back off a bit, maybe just a couple Snickers. Rest on Sunday. Maybe a single little Twix bar, that's pretty close to resting. Then Monday, up the bar. Nose to the stone. Put in a good week of work. Slow but steady. That’s my mantra. Come Halloween, I’ll be ready.
BRING IT ON!

A couple of Costco-sized bags is a good way to start. You'll need a few more as it gets closer.

We have, in the last 4 years, had a total of 3 kids looking for handouts. I figured the 3 of them were lost because we never have any trick or treaters. Because we can depend on close to zero doorbell ringers, 5 bags of peanut butter cups should be enough.

We may leave for the desert on the 31st, and if so, no candy will be bought.

In our apartment building, we keep a large bowl of sweets that the Board and some neighbors provide, which the doorman hands out to the kids in the lobby. They don't let anyone go running around the building. Little hooligans.
For the kids who live in the building, we leave a bowl outside our door for them to partake, or hang a sign on the door to invite them to ring the bell.

The worst kind of Halloween candy are the little tootsie rolls but instead of brown they are blue and red and colors like that. Around here is the kind of stuff people throw out at parades. Just unedible.

We will get a mixed bag of Hershey's mini bars so we will eat what is left over, which will be most of the bag. She gets the Mr. Goodbar and Milk Chocolate and I get the Dark Chocolate and Crunch bars.

Very few kids in our neighborhood and no soliciting, although I don't think asking for candy counts as soliciting. We get nobody on Halloween. But I did buy a big bag of candy to donate for our church's Trunk or Treat event.

These days our local trick-or-treating hours are pretty much over by the time it gets dark. It starts at 5:30 and ends at 8:00, but we seldom get anyone after 7:00. I seem to remember not going out until it was dark when I was a kid.

People decorate their car trunks in Halloween decor and gather in the church parking lot and give out candy to kids who come. May have a fire, refreshments, and adults in costume. Basically a church Halloween party and neighborhood outreach. Our church does it.

I seem to remember not going out until it was dark when I was a kid. We were allowed out about a half hour before sunset and had to be back once it was dark. But in the 50s everybody did Trick or Treat and we came home with several pounds of candy.

When I was teaching, kids would ask what I was giving out for Halloween. Over the years I told them small cans of mixed vegetables, fried eggs on toast, soup, hard boiled eggs, bunches of carrots, cans of sardines, and Chap Stix among other things. One year I said I was giving packets of meatloaf seasoning. I am sure that there are adults who tell their kids about the crazy teacher they had who gave out weird stuff at Halloween. At least, I hope so.
