I googled it up to see where the place it. I had no idea that there was topography in that part of Minnesota.

There is a ski hill in suburban Milwaukee grandly called Mount Olympia that was built on a landfill to get its vertical drop.

Andes was started as kind of a hobby by two wealthy brothers in the 80’s and has endured. It’s actually a nifty little place and has produced a lot of good skiers and some champion snowboarders.
They have 10K of great well maintained XC trails. Hilly and wooded out of the wind.

What a wonderful story Bill. Speaking of small ski areas, when I was in med school I heard of one just across the river from Omaha in a place called Crescent Iowa. I packed up my skis and went over there in early march on a sunny day. They had one run with a rope tow, a little patch of white in a greenish brown early spring landscape. There were dairy cows grazing near the bottom.
It was great fun and in the little lodge was an autographed picture of Stein Eriksen. He had actually skied there.

Stein toured Midwest ski areas a lot -- there are photos of him doing jumps at Trollhaugen in Dresser, Wis., off a snow launching pad that he built. I interviewed him once at Deer Valley and got to ski with him, as well. Charming man. And master of hip angulation!

When I lived in Lincoln I thought there was a place along I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln, just near the Platte River. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything about what it might have been. By the way, in looking for skiing I discovered "tanking," which is kind of like tubing on a river, minus the inner tube and plus a livestock tank. ohmyomaha.com/2021/05/tanking-nebraska/

Back in '83 I and a co-worker from Syracuse were temporarily working in Chicago through the Winter and traveling by car back to Syracuse every couple of weekends. Somewhere in northern Ohio on Rte 90 in the midst of horizon to horizon farm fields flat as a pancake there was an overpass with a rope-tow on it for skiing down the up-slope to the bridge.

I have skied a tiny hill I South Jersey when I was a truly neophyte skier. Pine Hill on the Boy Scout reservation. . The ski area just rented the bump for skiing. Had a 100 foot vertical 2 turns and slide to a stop.
