I pretty much copied Dana Bourgeois’ voicing techniques and double tenon neck joint. He has given some good talks on voicing tops that are archived and one summer a kid that just finished the Red Wing lutherie school spend three months in my shop. Dana had visited the school while he was there and he taught me what he had learned.
Voicing a closed box was a big one.
I was going to rout binding channels today but my most used guide bearings are getting a little worn so I decided to delay until I get new ones.
Still pretty weak from whatever virus hit me 10 days ago. Have not felt up to any paddling or long walks yet. Maybe tomorrow as the weather is stunning!

Dana Bourgeois has quite a few players' vids on his YouTube channel. I remember enjoying Sierra Hull on her LDB-0(?).

Just got up from my afternoon nap. I went down late because Charlie Parr dropped by to pick up his Gibson B-25-12 I've been working on for like ever.
He did not bring in the Gretsch Spider John gave him but will be back next week with it. He did show me photos he had taken of how they put 12 tuners on a headstock made for 6, OMG.
I will report then and have some photos.

LIke, maybe it'd make tuning easier.

I know Rickenbacker used 6 string tailpieces on 12 strings just to be cheap.

Holes are in short supply. They mostly come from China.

12 strings. I have always had one. I had a B-25-12, then a B-45-12, then I played a big Guild. Then I got the one I have now, which is a Taylor 555. It is mahogany like the Kottke model except no cutaway. It is the easiest playing 12 I have ever had. I have had it for 25 or 26 years. It’s big. I don’t like little 12 strings. I have been searching for ebony buttons to fit Grover mini gears for it for a long time. They are hard to find.

I got takeout fried chicken from Magnolia's tonight, all dark meat. I used to get a six-piece box, but now the smallest they offer is an eight-piece box, which kinda pisses me off because instead of getting home and scarfing two drumsticks and a thigh, now I have to come home and scarf two drumsticks and TWO thighs.

Voicing a closed box was a big one. Terry, how do you voice a closed box? Mike All jokes aside, it’s basically thinning the edges of the lower bout with a sander while tapping and feeling and listening. You can hear it change. I do it before binding so I can measure to some degree the thickness of the edge An OM top will usually wind up around 0.114-0.118” in the center and around 0.090 on the edges of the lower bout.

I have heard, but don’t know if it’s true, that Collings deal was a relatively thick top in the center and thinned out edges. Which sounds similar to what you do. Mike

In 1966 I took a job with Collins Radio and moved to Cedar Rapids, working at a small production facility. A week after I started working there a beautiful, 18 year old, green eyed blond started working there and we immediately became a thing, going together for a year and a half, at which time she quit her job to attend college. We drifted apart. Fast forward 53 years, 2 years ago,. I saw in her mother's obituary that she had been married but was widowed, living Florida. This summer I debated, with my self, trying to contact her. I found a phone number for her and in September I made the call. She answered the phone, remembered me, and after many 3 and 4 hour phone calls we decided we should meet in person. Two weeks ago she flew to Cedar Rapids for a two week visit. Yesterday she flew home after a great 2 week visit. Now it's my turn to travel and this winter I'll be spending some time in Florida. She is quite a wonderful person and I am so happy for the both of you. By the way, she has great taste in music, and musicians! Best of luck in the future.

Here's another view of a similar Taylor bridge: Todd Cambio of Fraulini Guitars (lots of replicas of early Italian-American guitars, as well as replicas of Stellas) does them as well.
