Did you know that if your Vespa battery is down to only 9.9 volts, even though it will turn the starter over, the bike won’t actually start. Hmmm. But after a couple of hours on a battery tender, it fired right up. I know, right? News you can use. Mike

Vespas look a lot different than they did in 1962 when I almost got killed on one.

Several kids in my little farm town had Cushmans. Not legal at their age, but ignored by the town marshal. There were a couple of serious head injuries. No helmets. The small wheel of a scooter drops right down into a pothole and crashes hard into the far side.

The Vespa that nearly got me was my younger brother's.

“Duodenum”. Isn’t that the chord progression on “Hotel California”?

Despite the scars I collected in '64-65, I loved driving my Vespa 125 around Rome. (Though a night trip to Florence via the Autostrada was not only very imprudent but uncomfortable in October and, with trucks blowing past at 100+ kph, probably life-threatening as well.) I read that review of the new model, and Vespa technologies have changed utterly. Mine was a kick-starter two-stroke (requiring 2%-mix gas from special gasolio pumps) with a manual three-speed transmission. Nevertheless, the experience of zipping around city streets was exactly as described by the reviewer. On the other hand, when he writes that he saw many vintage Vespas in Rome, what I saw when we were in Sezze a decade ago were Asian scooters and mini-bikes. And everybody but everybody wore a helmet, which I never saw on scooter-riders back in the '60s. Mine looked very much like this:

Battery, schmattery - Here is the farm "Vespa" we had back in the 60s = no battery required:

Welp, the jury is in, the battery is out. It won’t hold a charge. Bummer cause the weather is perfect for cruising around. But since we are leaving for the coast on Sunday, I’ll wait to replace the battery until I come back down in Feb. in the meantime, enjoy this moto related tune. Just replace the lyric cobra with Vespa!
