I read that article, or one like it.
There's one in PA that's been burning for decades, one in Oz that's estimated at 6000yrs.
"Due to their virtually endless supply of fuel and oxygen, many coal seam fires are expected to keep burning well into the next century. Most coal seam fires are ignited by human activity, usually in the process of coal mining or waste removal."

I’ve loved that since the first time I heard Beyond The Fringe in 1961 or ’2. Totally brilliant. I got to see Cook and Dudley Moore together in a show called Good Evening in which they reprised many of the BtF skits including an updated version of the miner monologue that included naked ladies dancing across the desert. A fond memory.
