I would have put her ahead of a lot of those people like Garth Brooks and Lionel Richie. Did they even wrote their own material?

Garth was "discovered" at the Bluebird Cafe. Lionel Richie was a prolific songwriter for the Commodores before going out on his own. Both Lionel Ritchie and Garth Brooks (and Gloria Estafan, and Carole King) had major, major chart success, so that might be a factor (rather than who is most "deserving").

I suppose so. It's not so much about writing as succeeding as a POP artist I guess. I know a lot of Garth's tunes weren't written by him. Don't know about Richie. But Joni was all Joni.
"Longneck Bottle" is a song written by Steve Wariner and Rick Carnes
"You Move Me" is a song co-written by Gordon Kennedy and Pierce Pettis
