Digital audio/video playback with slow-down and repeats of arbitrary sections might offer some of the attention-focusing that learning how to make good photos does.
But I learned to hear music by listening a lot over the decades--and by playing enough different kinds (especially in the direction of jazz) to have some physical connection to what I hear. The five years of sitting in with the Monday Night Jazz guys--the combination of following a chart, listening to my bandmates, and playing along and fitting in-- has sharpened my perceptions a good bit.

I'm not a big fan of Dorothea Lange. I'd never call her a great documentary photographer. She sacrificed her humanity to get memorable shots. She had her reward.
That doesn't mean she was wrong about everything. Photography causes you to see things...differently. I picked that adverb with care. I couldn't think of a better one.

I know nothing about her. Maybe not by name but you'd recognize some of her photos. www.history.com/news/migrant-mother-new-deal-great-depression

A cross-thread observation about observing and understanding:
I'm finding the Barry Harris workshop videos (one of which I linked in the finger exercise thread) fascinating--this one has me finally hearing what's going on in "Giant Steps."

Yeah I looked her up. Saw the photos. But didn't read anything about despicable practices.

Marshall, sorry if I implied there were despicable practices. I'm not aware of any. But I don't care much for people who view other people as things to be used to advance a career, or to promote some preconceived idea, and I think she did those things.
