29 of the 30 most watched television broadcasts in the United States (according to Nielsen) have been Super Bowls. What was the single non-football broadcast event/episode to crack the list? (it came in at #10).
No googling answer until tomorrow at noon. As recompense, I will offer one hint and answer any yes or no question. If I am not online at the time, Todd is authorized to answer for me.
Hint: It was not a chicken.

My guess would be 9/11.

Excellent guess. But wrong. Or right.
I shouldn't have used the word "event", which is something that could spread across not only a day but over a week or longer. Focus on "episode" or something "scripted". or "event" in the sense of a sporting event or a movie or something contained as a single production with beginning and end.
Ok, there is a certain arbitrariness to this deal. Anyway, 9/11 wasn't on the Nielsen list I googled, which I only googled because I heard the "trivia" Q&A on the radio when I was on the way home from the grocery store.

I think I have a good guess, but as the authorized answerer I won't state it.

Yep. Final episode of MASH.
Near as I can tell, James and Marty's wife tied for first. Mike came in second with "The Big Bang Theory". And jdd came in third, tied with John, who didn't actually provide an answer, but Todd got some positive vibes. So we're going with it.
Near as I can tell, the most watched show on earth, ever, was a cricket match between India and Pakistan, followed closely by anything involving Princess Diana. Third was the Simpsons' Halloween Special, #1, with the subsequent Simpsons' Halloween Specials filling out the the remaining spots in the top ten.

Was it the PBS concert of Tibetan Throat Singing? I know the viewing audience was huge.

I'm glad I didn't guess. I was thinking 9/11 or January 6th but it makes sense that it was entertainment.

I'd have to rate M*A*S*H as easily one of the top 10 TV shows ever, along with Cheers/Frazier, and the Simpsons. I'm not sure I could come up with 7 others. Maybe there isn't a top 10?

egads I was right. Final episode of Mash. A whole lot of us filled up the student union at the University of Northern Iowa where they showed it on what was at the time a big screen.
