"Word missing here"? Probably. There are many typos of many kinds due to my relatively recent hospitalization. One of the few side effects remaining is a tendency to get lost even in software I once knew well. Typos I would ordinarily correct are a small example. I'm glad we have a copyeditor handy to clear up my meaning.
For anyone who doesn't already know, I was hospitalized in early February for what turns out to have been a minor problem, but kept me hospitalized for ten days. It was correctly called a seizure. That's a word that actually covers everything from temporary symptoms like mine up to epilepsy, which I've never understood. My minor seizure was caused by extreme grief resulting from recent news of some deaths.
An unexpected side effect was that I was in remarkably good condition for a man of 72. My six daily beers had never been problem drinking. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but I was advised by some of the most respected physicians in the state that I had no reason to worry about a smoking habit that dated back to age 14. They didn't explain the reason but my guess is something would kill me first as long as I kept up routine tests. I've been lucky. I have friends who weren't.
I try not be controversial in the daily but I can't help mentioning how I angry I was when tobacco taxes, which were already high, were jacked up about ten years back. A primary reason they were raised was that supporters would never have to pay them. They would be paid by guys like Doug Heard, who had a acquired a common habit while laying his ass on the line for a country he loved. I never did that. A friend who did, mostly because he had no way to avoid the draft any longer, served there as a platoon commander. He noticed that the guys still fighting and dying usually had names like Juan or Billy Bob. Whenever he was sent to a dangerous area, his real mission was to get back with as many live troops as he could. He didn't always accomplish that. That's a long-winded way of explaining why increases in tobacco taxes always pissed me off. (Bill, I understand why your attitude was different and entirely understandable).
