Stumbled across this nine year old video with three original members on a classic. I didn’t know Chris Eldridge was Ben’s son. When I was playing banjo Ben was my idol. Now Starling and Aldrich are gone.
In 1996 I played on an album for a local singer songwriter that we sent to Billy Wolf of Birchmere fame to master because we loved all the Scene albums. I remember calling him about it and he said that John Duffy had died the day before. Sudden heart attack.
I was at a meeting in DC once and saw they were at The Birchmere on a Wednesday night. I went out. It was the original line up. Duffy, Starling, Eldridge, Aldrich, and Tom Gray. Not a big crowd. They were having a lot of fun. Great night. Duffy had on some loud multicolored cargo pants with pockets down on the legs.
He said it was so he could play pocket pool during gigs, regular pockets didn’t work for him.

Mighty fine. I love a good melancholy tune. That's sure one.

Gorgeous song, beautifully done.
But when the vocals come in, man I miss John Duffy.

Here’s a good video of John D singing it. No John Starling, he was busy making money as an ENT surgeon or as he used to say ENW - ear nose and wallet.

Always loved that song. Rickie Simpkins was the fiddler when I saw the Tony Rice Unit.
