The first two videos seemed phoned in. The Knopfler and Atkins video wa\ws great. They were listening and playing the song. The same for Django. Spanks for the Memories' version was a bad recording and too hard to listen to. Leon's version was light, well produced, and made me think of sleeping. I love Leon Redbone. The last was fun local event, especially for the youngster playing on stage.

The big guy is Eddie Pennington, known for being the best at playing in Merle Travis’s style. Stage right is Alonzo Pennington, Eddie’s son and a great player too. The youngster s Eddie’s grandson and the guy who’s stage left is Paul Mosley, another legendary thumbstyle player. Doc knows all these guys and Doc introduced me to Eddie down in Powderly, KY.

Sebastan Muller doing a nice steel jazz version.

It’s a song that fascinates me and, even though everyone does it a little differently, it’s instantly recognizable and fun.

I have a soft spot for the Asylum Street Spankers' version. That first record was an attempt to capture their live show, with just one room mic. At the time, they played most of their gigs unamplified. So what you're hearing on the recording is what you might have heard in the room listening to them perform.

I like the Bresh video. He was good and, sometimes, came across as really laid back, but there is nice picking going on there. I found the first video interesting for the gypsy jazz element. Knopfler, Atkins, Django—well, what can I say? I liked Redbone, but I am not a Spankers fan. Coots was pretty interesting & I love the steel version. It’s just a song that fascinates me.

Many people who don't care for the Asylum Street Spankers probably hadn't seen their live show. I saw them here in NY several times in the 1990s, and their shows were quite entertaining, their musicianship of high quality. Their whole thing was entirely acoustic, no amplification, and when they recorded they used one mic. Primitive, yes. Sometimes that's OK. The "Spankers" part of the band name had to do with the paddle they had, with which they threatened to "spank" audience members who made to much noise during their acoustic shows. The band dissolved after a final tour in 2011.
I love this instrumental version with Bucky Pizzarelli and Pearl Django.

That’s a nice recording. I loved Bucky. I’ll still pass on the Spankers and it’s ok if we don’t like the same things.

Sebastan Muller doing a nice steel jazz version. That was fantastic. Not that I know a lot of steel players, but not sure I've heard one hit gypsy jazz quite that nicely. He really does have a lot of Django's phrasing in there. Doesn't hurt of course that the backing track is very gypsy jazz as well, but it was great.

He's way too talented.

I remember that pizzarelli video. That fiddler is just so perfect on that.

The Spankers are growing on me as I keep listening to those recordings. Won’t be the first time I changed my mind.
