I found myself in a conversation with a guy from North Dakota yesterday. New to Iowa, he was making some day trips from his new home in Iowa City to get acquainted with the state. He had some interesting things to say, like how North and South Dakota should really have been divided to East and West Dakota because that's closer to how the two states share similarities. He had even been in Minnesota to a town named Newfolden. And he said how he was surprised when he ordered a pickle with his beer on his first visit to a tavern here, and they brought the pickle spear out on a napkin instead of putting in in the beer like he expected. Apparently, ordering a beer with a pickle in it is a common thing way up in North Dakota, as is asking for a couple olives in your beer as well.
So my question is, do people really do that in North Dakota? And if so, why do people do that in North Dakota? I don't recall ever seeing this on any Duck Band tour up there. Of course this might have something to do with gig venues, which are far too classy for anthing like this.

Once in a while, my dad would put an olive in his beer-filled glass and call it a Norwegian Martini.

I confess, a pickle in the beer is new one to me. I will and do put a pickle in my Bloody Mary, and sometimes I will miss and the pickle ends up in my chaser. But, that is inadvertent. Interesting, but, inadvertent.

When we were at IJ with you folks, someone said that Epaul put his pickle in his beer…but I may have misheard that. It did seem a bit odd at the time, though, you know…epaul.

I haven’t thought about this in 50 years but I remember my mother would treat herself to an icy cold beer on Saturday evenings as we watched Lawrence Welk. She would pour the bottle of beer into a refrigerated glass and then grab the salt shaker and proceed to SALT her beer. She said it made it taste even better.
I am wondering if the pickle in the beer is simply a way to add salt to the beer to enhance the flavor. It does seem that beer goes great with salty snacks, ie., nuts, pretzels, chips etc.
I love pickles, I think I might give this a try the next time I have a beer.

I never eat pickles. Maybe, once or twice a year I have a corned beef sandwich and have a dill spear on the side that I might take a bite of, but that’s it. If one was in my beer, I would view it like a fly in my soup.

Salt shakers were standard issue in Sconnie taverns back in the day, with each poured tap beer getting a pinch of salt. I think it affected the carbonation as well as the taste. Anyhoo, it was common back then, I doubt it is today.

I remember guys salting their beer back in my steel mill days. One guy used to dump a handful of salted peanuts in his beer.

I'd be a tad embarrassed sitting next to a guy drinking a beer with a pickle in it. I would say it's a little on the phallic side of life. "Here, this Buds for you" and all. Lets suck pickles.

A gentleman uses pickle slices rather than a whole pickle. Speaking of pickles, people must eat a lot of them. The mini mart at the gas station I frequent has a shelf full of individually packaged pickles-hot, garlic, regular-and he must sell a lot of them because he is constantly adding more to the shelf. I never really thought of a garlic pickle as walking around snack food.

My Dad salted his beer. Another Western Nebraska favorite was tomato juice and beer. Not bad!

Drop a pickle in something real light like a Hamm's might be nice. Then again, dropping anything in a Hamm's might make it better.

Haven’t heard of putting pickles in beer before. I don’t think it’s something I will try.
Of course people in Wisconsin will try anything. I remember back in the early 1970s our band had a bunch of fans from St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI, near Green Bay. They arranged to have us perform up there and after the show they wanted to take us “out on the town.” By my count at that time, De Pere had one bar for every thirteen residents. Everywhere we went, people were adding a Snappy Tom (small can of spiced tomato juice) to their beer. I thought that sounded like a seriously bad idea but the kids persuaded me to try one and it was actually quite tasty. I was surprised. Of course the beer was probably PBR or something of that ilk.
