I remember back in the early 1970s our band had a bunch of fans from St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI, near Green Bay. They arranged to have us perform up there and after the show they wanted to take us “out on the town.” By my count at that time, De Pere had one bar for every thirteen residents. I lived on N. Broadway in Green Bay, a street that extended south to De Pere, about 6 miles or so, and there were 120 bars in that stretch. It all went back to the early 1800s and Fort Howard -- Broadway was the line of demarcation between the fort and where saloons could legally be located.

We used to drink tomato juice and beer in the pub. Called a Redeye in these parts. (Looking back, it helped mask the taste of the crappy draft beer.)

I haven’t thought about this in 50 years but I remember my mother would treat herself to an icy cold beer on Saturday evenings as we watched Lawrence Welk. She would pour the bottle of beer into a refrigerated glass and then grab the salt shaker and proceed to SALT her beer. She said it made it taste even better. I am wondering if the pickle in the beer is simply a way to add salt to the beer to enhance the flavor. It does seem that beer goes great with salty snacks, ie., nuts, pretzels, chips etc. I love pickles, I think I might give this a try the next time I have a beer. I'm not much of a beer drinker, more of a wino. That said, I wouldn't mind trying salt in a beer - sounds interesting! I think I'll pass on the pickle though - unless it's a Bubbie's - they pickle theirs in salt water.

Although, my music partner and I do enjoy a Tyskie Polish Beer (or two) while we are working on music for our shows. I am definitely going to try salt in a beer and will post my thoughts. I will be interested to hear what you think of salted beer. I love pickles and I bet I would love Bubbie’s. I am one of those people who will actually pay $5.00 for a homemade garlic dill pickle at the State Fair. Pickle on a stick. Love it.

Of course people in Wisconsin will try anything. I once tried a beer that was made with clam juice. One sip and I felt nauseous. Just thinking about it is making me feel nauseous. YUCK!

Most the new breweries in the area all have those young-people beers. Lotsa IPAs and Super IPAs. That, plus fruity concoctions. The Pollyanna Brewery I was at last week had a Lunchbox blond ale. . . . , it had orange juice in it. I tried several different small samplers. As much as I hate to admit it, the Lunchbox was the winner. Though I won't be bringing any home in a growler.

My Dad salted his beer. Another Western Nebraska favorite was tomato juice and beer. Not bad! Did the beer and tomato juice thing myself for awhile. Ha a certain appeal.

I still enjoy my occasional "Spicy V-8 Juice" and beer. Regular V-8 juice also works, but I like their spicy concoction better. It works well with PBR, Henry's, Bud, and other mellow flavored beers.
As to pickles in my beer, it sounds bad, but I might give it a try.

Broadway was the line of demarcation between the fort and where saloons could legally be located. I once did summer stock in a small town that was proud of being a dry town. Residents bragged about it. Twelve yards outside the city limits was the biggest loudest shit-kicking county-western bar I've ever been in.
