Was watching a Jesse Stone movie the other night. This guitar accompaniment stopped me in my tracks. Well, I wasn't moving, so I guess I wasn't stopped. But I took notice. I replayed. Several times.
Yeah, Nancy Wilson already killed it, but the guitar thing (and the spare guitar and vocal thing)....
Wadda song.

I see that Jeff Beal did the music for the movie--same guy who wrote the original theme for Monk (with Grant Geismann on guitar)--it reminded me of Barney Kessel backing Julie London. Can't find a credit for the player here--though I would think that Gloria Reuben did her own singing.

That’s great. Thanks. Russ didn’t Howard Roberts back Julie too, like on Cry Me A River. I remember trying to learn the guitar part a while back and giving up on it.

It's Kessel on the 1955 Julie version of "Cry Me a River."
On that Kweskin/Wilson track, the template is clearly the Julie version with addition of a sax solo. Nice pipes on Samoa.
BTW, here's a video of the Julie/Kessel version with a running tab-and-chords transcription.
(Oops--forgot the link.)

Those changes don’t look so bad. It’s been a while, think I’ll revisit. Thanks Russ.

The bass helps a lot in that arrangement--without it, those arpeggios and high-voiced chords would sound a bit lonely.

A good bass floats all boats, plus it could save your life if a flash flood hit the venue.
