Hey, y'all. I know there is a songwriting area on this forum, but I don't think folks check in there very often, so I'm posting this here. No hard feelings if the moderators choose to move it.
This is a rough video of a song I finished recently. I got the idea while on a trip out west, over 30 years ago. A few lines just languished in my songwriting notebook until I recently made the effort to complete it. I think it turned out okay.
The title is "Georgia With You."
I hope you will check it out, and that it doesn't ruin your day!
I apologize for the audio static at the beginning and end. I'd edit it out, but I don't know how. Also, I know the video cuts off half my head. I was afraid to try another take and screw it up, and no one needs to see all of my face anyway.

Love that, Shannon. Very nice job all around. Comments are turned off so all I could do was a thumbs-up.

Really nice tune, Shannon. Lyrics are lovely. I think we’re about the same range, vocally, from the sounds of it. Do you do more formal recordings, as well?

Shannon, do you mean to have content made for kids turned on in YouTube? It’s confusing what it is, the way it’s presented in the interface. It’s not, “this is safe for kids,” it’s, “I’ve turned off everything that a kid might do while watching this that could lead to trouble,” like leaving comments. support.google.com/youtube/answer/9632097?nohelpkit=1&hl=en

That’s great! You have a lovely voice and the picking is clean and tasteful.

Very nicely done on all levels. Love your voice. Cool song.
There’s a local songwriting contest here this summer. I entered last year and made the finals. The premise is to write a song about the NW suburbs. I’m starting to work on this years song. And I’m thinking of something along your lines, in that the singer is off to other places and longing for “home.”

Hmm. I pushed the wrong button while posting the video. Comments should be allowed now. Thanks to you folks who pointed it out.

I've worked a little bit with more formal recording, but I haven't done anything in a while. I think this song could be a good foundation for some extra instruments and background vocals. Maybe I'll try it soon.

Nice song, great voice.
Constructive (I hope) suggestion.
The song melody, the song lyrics, and your voice are all smooth, sweet, and peaceful. The sound of the guitar in the mix, however, is loud, brash, and bright. While loud, brash, and bright are all wonderful qualities in the right situation, this song is not that situation. This song would be better served by a quieter, sweeter, warmer, and quieter guitar voice that won't conflict with the warm sweet melody, lyrics, and voice.
I only say this because I really liked the song and your voice... and the strong, bright guitar covered what I wanted to listen to. The guitar shouldn't dominate or be the focus here.

If I might suggest, drop the guitar and add a trombone or two.
(that's a joke, son. sort of. okay, really)

I'm such a sucker for 3/4 time! I think it is the only thing I've ever written in 3/4 time, and it is also the most country-sounding thing I've ever done. It was fun.

I tend to agree with this. Perhaps fingerpicking it would solve the volume issue. Don't you have a mahog B&S guitar, Shannon? I was thinking my Kennedy would work well on this tune (and it's for sale, hint, hint ).

I appreciate the suggestions. This was just rough video, with no EQ afterwards. When I ever get around to doing a more serious recording, I hope to make it sound better. I really just felt like playing that guitar today.

I think this song could be a good foundation for some extra instruments and background vocals. Maybe I'll try it soon.[/quote] Absolutely it could. I like it lots. What makes me really like it is that both the playing and the singing are both completely unstrained. That's something that a lot of people with your voice range have difficulty doing. You don't at all, and the guitar moves along in a nice easy way with enough changes to keep the whole thing moving along. This is really nice!

I like the guitar just the way it is. It's a little too loud, with your mic setup, for your voice maybe. But the pattern and style of playing fits the song very well.

I was thinking this too, but now that someone with recording experience has said it I feel more confident in expressing my opinion. To me it seemed more like a balance issue, because of a one mic setup, rather than a harshness issue with the guitar tone.
