I found this 1987 video very enlightening even if I couldn’t do it myself. His hybrid picking is the best of both worlds.

Lonnie Knight could pick like that; using a pick and fingers at the same time. Richard Thompson does it too. And Eric Clapton. But I hold a pick mostly between my thumb and 2nd finger, so that only leaves the 3rd finger and pinky for finger stuff. I've tried switching to thumb and index, or to getting the pinky involved. But an old dog keeps getting in the way.

Over-the-top amazing.
I love when he rolls off some crazy impossible sequence and follows with "whatever".

My brother has played that way for years (though he's no virtuoso).

A little Johnny Hiland and Mike Barrow, perhaps?

Tommy Emmanuel started out hybrid picking, because he couldn’t figure out what Chet Atkins was doing. Then he discovered thumbpicks, but still hybrid picks on occasion. Steve Howe of Yes hybrid picks, and The Clap, and Mood for a Day are pretty amazing.
Always looked like a waste to me. A thumbpick, and you get all the use of the flatpick, plus all your fingers when you want.
