I'm pondering becoming a member. I'm sure there a few members here. Do you folks recommend it, if so, what are the biggest advantages? Thanks!

We are AARP members and I have to say there are very few avenues available that will garner the level of junk mail, email spam, and useless txt messages that I enjoy from AARP.
I am required to be a member because my health insurance is the AARP branded UnitedHealthcare policy. I opted for the, now unavailable, Plan F and hang onto it because it’s really good and I don’t want to give it up.
I buy five years of membership at a time so I don’t have to keep track of renewals. It means I can insert their mailings directly into the shredder without having to open them first.
On the plus side, they are a strong and effective lobbying group for senior rights. I’m grateful for that. They also have a bunch of programs that should be using but don’t like cheap gym memberships and stuff. And they often provide useful medical advice.

Like Dub, Nancy and I also have their branded insurance, in our cases AARP Medicare Advantage. We like it. Membership cost is minimal. I read the publications they send most of the time.
We also get 5% off our Consumer Cellular bill by being members. And they offer a lot of restaurant discounts I forget to use, plus a lot of other discounts.
Membership is $9/year if you get a five year membership.

The leather jackets they send the members are cool. They are like the one worn by Brando in The Wild One. Big ass AARP emblem on the back surrounding a flaming skull. Young people step aside when they see a bunch of oldsters coming down the street in those jackets, man. Ask for the AARP discount at the marijuana dispensary, too.

For that reason and more I opted to pay few dollars more in premiums with another carrier. Humana quietly takes my money and otherwise leaves me (mostly) alone.

They have a website.Sue got a membership along with a credit card she took through AARP years and years ago. We have since found that virtually all the “discounts” are mostly useless. The deals on hotels and travel, etc. are all no better (or worse) than the deals I get from being a free member of (insert travel / hotel membership here). Since they’ve started to take many lobbying positions that I’m not happy with, I don’t find them to be anything I continue to fund. Oh and they changed the name of the magazine from modern maturity so now I can’t do Tom Paxton’s song about it anymore.

As others have said, when you are of Medicare ages, AARP has a good plan for supplemental coverage Medicare doesn’t cover. Other than that it’ bullshit.
We have the AARP suplimental insurance.

My old cloth dress vest is getting natty, so DaWife says, but I love it for all the pockets. 6 of them, 2 outside 4 inside. The new one only has 4 but the inside ones are quite large. It's not too biker-ish so maybe I'll get used to it. I ordered it this evening and delivery will be tomorrow, DaWife says I suck, she has to wait for days for her stuff. Now back to our regularly programed thread. If there is such a thing.

AARP as an organization is pretty worthless. It is really just a "liberal" political lobby for old people. There is a "conservative" political lobby for old people too. I forget what it's called. The two lobby on opposite ends of the spectrum.
As Dub said, the AARP aligned medicare supplemental plan by United Health (plan F) is the only good thing I have found from AARP.

Yeah, we've the AARP supplemental insurance that covers what Medicare doesn't, and a free membership at the Y. Don't bother to join until you're ready for Medicare. (Sign up for Medicare Part A as soon a you're eligible. It doesn't cost anything. Wait to join Part B until you quit working.)
What does a "conservative" political lobby for old people do? Push to cut Social Security and end Medicare?

That's what I learned, David. Don't join until you're ready for Medicare. I've got five years.
