1679 - Habeas Corpus Act passes in England, strengthening a person's right to challenge unlawful arrest and imprisonment
1861 - President Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus is challenged
Bike ride this morning, chilled/napped on the couch, did a full load of laundry and some other cleaning, my wife cooked--skewered veggies and chicken done in the grill--and I fed the dishwasher.

Good morning.
52F-81F sunny.
Saturday shop. My new vest will be here today and it may just get delivered by grandson Manny(Emanuel). If so he'll stop for a short visit. He delivers FedEx and some Amazon.

The offspring went upstate with friends last night, now happily ensconced in the large 1812 house on Main Street they bought in their weekend town. They will spend the weekend thrift shopping, cooking, browsing antiques, etc. I got to sleep in this morning! Didn't get out of bed until 8:00 am!
Kitchen/dining area coming along. Red oak tongue-in-groove flooring now installed, electrical and plumbing progressing nicely. Dust on our side of the plastic wall is minimal. Some predictable delays have taken root—the cabinet guy and the architect have been doing some wrestling over the shop drawings.
It's Saturday.

Sunny and cool, a stretch of summery weather ahead.
Bracing myself for three days of granddaughters and extended family.

Good morning. It was 68° when I got up and I suspect it will be in the 90s this afternoon.
This morning, a tech from Best Buy will be coming by to install the new monitor. I couldn’t. Someone on the geek squad at Best Buy couldn’t do it by phone. I sincerely hope the computer will be up and working after this visit.
I am now on my ninth day of abstaining from alcohol. I don’t like it but it hasn’t been hard. It’s necessary. It’s necessary that I give up alcohol to make sure that I don’t have any more seizures. Well worth it.
Phoenix is the fastest growing city in the country, I’ve heard. That’s great for our property value. It’s jeopardizing our water supply and reducing the quality of life. Traffic is awful. But that’s the modern world.
Enjoy your day.

Morning. I’m up, and looking forward to kicking tires with a David at a guitar store. But first, breakfast and coffee.

Back from Trader Joe's and then a stop at Honest1 Car Care to check and adjust tire pressures, as a warning light had come on. All tires were brought up to spec, but the eagle-eyed tech spied a nail in the right rear, and they could not work me in to get that fixed today. So I went to Norm's Tire, and they are closed on Saturdays. Seems like an odd business model. I'll just have to keep an eye on it for now, I guess.
Last stop was Sport Clips, where the lovely and heavily tattooed Amanda dispatched my beard's whiskers with skill and speed. Ten bucks for the trim and a like amount for the tip.

I stopped drinking alcohol in September 2021. I don't miss it, and I don't miss the acid reflux that almost always accompanied imbibing. I can pour wine for anyone else at the table and be perfectly happy with a glass of sparkling water for me. If it gives you a better lease on your health, it's totally worth it.
Regarding Phoenix, well, you know what New York was like when you lived here. It has gotten worse and, yet, I can't picture myself living anywhere else.

Morning, Sunshine Gang!
Later today, I'll be heading over Grand Cities Auto Repair to strum a few guitars, then up to the farm to plant the pumpkin patch and pick asparagus.
(tonight: stir fried asparagus with fat shrimp, chunky bell peppers, fresh chives, and baby bella mushrooms, all to be served on linguine with tomatoes and a light marinara sauce. The shrimp will get a dusting of Uncle Billy's special, family secret, Cajun seasoning.)

Baby Bella mushrooms are rebranded cremini mushrooms so they can charge you more for them.

Howard, you do get to the point where your life is so invested in a place that it’s too late for a major change. I’m certainly there. Luckily I don’t want to make a change and my wife would rule it out, even if I did.

Yesterday was chainsaw day so up early today to get the slash pile burning and get the last two loads of sticks and log rounds tractored up to the burn pile. Once we got the fire going I made an old fashioned eggs, bacon, and wheat toast breakfast. Especially tasty after two hours of working. There’s more to do but I feel a nap coming on.

On this day in 1936 the Cunard liner RMS Queen Mary left England on its maiden voyage to New York.
On this day in 1957, the Buddy Holly hit That’ll Be The Day was released.

I have come around to seeing it this way, too. My roots and whole life have always been here, and I can't imagine uprooting myself and starting a new life at the age of 71 (when the offspring goes off to university) someplace I don't know, where I have few or no friends, where I'd need to get into a car to buy groceries, or where I'd have to mow acreage and shovel snow. And "God's Waiting Room" (Florida) is entirely off the table.
Besides, would I give up living in an urban environment that looks like this?

Actually, Dan, I haven’t had any difficulty at all. Beer and wine were simply pleasures at the end of the day. They weren’t anything I needed. My first night out of the hospital I went to an event at church where everyone else was having wine. I would have enjoyed a glass, but I had no trouble passing it up.

Put some ice cubes in your glass. They neutralize the alcohol and you can drink all you want!
