Fiddlerina is off to Holbrook today to do some Irish music with Bob & Kristie Black and Banjoy. We paid our Decoration Day respects yesterday with what we call the Red Geranium Society. The RGS is a family thing where we assemble in Polk County and go to all the country cemeteries where our forebears are buried, planting red geraniums at each grave and recalling all the stories told about each one. This yearβs contingent included family from San Francisco, Connecticut, Ohio, and Minnesota as well as Iowa. There were seventeen of us all told and more for dinner at a restaurant where we had a good sized room reserved. A good time was had by all.

As an aside, I remember the first time I went to Ijam. Todd showed me around and explained that Vinton supplied ammunition to the federal troops during the Civil War. I observed that it might have been used to shoot at my ancestors, the majority of whom were Confederates. All that was long ago. Today we should all honor whomever we think appropriate.

Tyler came by and helped us with moving stuff in the living room to get Cheri's office desk where she wants it. He also did just a bit of yard work for me. He wants a new Playstation so since he was going to Half Price books to sell a bunch he had we gave him even more and a old Sega 16 bit system to sell. He can keep the proceeds toward his new system and I found a old Game Cube he can have also. If he digs around in all those boxes upstairs he will probably find a bunch of games for both systems.

Interesting, I was totally unaware of that. It seems odd as there are no lead mines or shot towers that I know of.

The Braille School had a copper roof. And copper baptismal font in the Presbyterian church (and I'm sure others) was also melted down.

If it was a gravel road, she might have been in the process of laying her eggs. Gravel roads, especially the sandier sort, are desired egg laying spots for turtles of many sorts; or the shoulder of a tar road. Amazing they live as long as they do (30-40 years or so for a large snapper). Only the females ever leave the water. The males spend their entire lives underwater, sticking only their snout out for air. Those females travel a surprisingly long distance; I see them on the gravel on our road which is not close to the river.

Yes, hugs to you and the girls, Todd. And I'm SO glad the girls didn't fill in the second date for you when they ordered that monument. I'd like to keep it a mystery.

Morning. Neighborhood BBQ in a few hours. We are bringing shrimp boil.
I donβt know of any ancestors that actually died in battles past but Iβm certain somewhere at some time in some place one of my forebears met his end while atop a f*****g horse. It would explain a lot.

Steve, I used to have no interest whatsoever in my ancestry. I knew quite a bit of history and when I began looking I found that my ancestors had been involved in a lot of American history. It gave me a difference sense of who I was and where I came from. That's how I first learned that I had relatives on the Union side in the Civil War.
Checking my ancestry on Ancestry.com led me to discover my half-Vietnamese half-brother. We watch Finding Your Roots on PBS. They trace the ancestors of famous people who appear as guests. Clint Black has black ancestors. Angela Davis, a long-time black activist, had ancestors on the Mayflower. Most black people have substantial white ancestry and most know it. They're descended from slaves and slave owners. Grasping all this gave me a different sense of the country. We're all them. They're all us.

Angela Davis, a long-time black activist, had ancestors on the Mayflower. Hey, several of my ancestors came over on the Mayflower, maybe Iβm related to Angela, Davis. Of course there is this from familysearch.org

Saw my 12yo grandson play a travel league baseball tournament game. They lost the championship game, but Ethan made 2 big-league catches in centerfield. He won tournament MVP for his team. Beautiful day. Fun time.

Hard to imagine a more hoosier scene than this (from my route today). The snapper I mentioned yesterday.
