Attention! Tomorrow (6/7), 6-8 pm at the Midway Saloon in St. Paul, Pat Donohue & Friends will include Mike Dowling and Randy Sabien. I'll be there, unless the Outback backs out of the deal. Free, with a tip bucket that Pat's fans pass around quite insistently. Decent beer and a good sound system, but not all that much seating.

I was lucky to get any seat at all. A half-hour before showtime, the whole back third of the saloon (where the stage is) was full, and people had spilled out into the main room. A couple was good enough to let me perch at their taboret, so I didn't have to stand out in the bar and watch the big monitor. The crowd was partly a result of it being the second anniversery of the Pat Donohue & Friends Wednesday-night gigs, though the two other nights I attended were also pretty full.
It was a very enjoyable show--relaxed, funny, with some good off-the-cuff interaction. I'd never seen Randy Sabien live, and was a bit surprised at how good a guitarist he is--not just good-for-a-fiddler, but plain old good. And all three delivered some wicked-quick funny songs.

I might add that Pat played a new-to-me parody song, set to "Chopsticks" and mocking them as try to eat inexpertly with those implements. And Mike and Randy played harmonies behind the guitar arrangement. On the fly. By ear.
