Well, shit. I met him a couple of times and corresponded more, and he was always very generous with materials to help with my slack-key research. I had no idea he was ailing--I got a coming-through-your-area concert notice not that long ago. I found him relaxed, unpretentious, and interesting to talk to about any of his enthusiasms. He was a considerable slack-key player. And good on harmonica as well, which he told me he could practice while driving overnight to his next gig.
He was also generous with the players he recorded for Dancing Cat, and (if I'm recalling correctly) offered them their masters when he closed down that operation. I'm sure that he maintained an enormous amount of material that ought to become an archive. When he first recorded Raymond Kane (who everybody was sure was going die soon), they set up in the Kanes' living room in the evening and just let the tape run. Ben Churchill, who produced the sessions, told me that they had a hell of a time supressing the ambient sounds, like a lizard that insisted on singing along.
Not long ago, I was wondering whether I'll ever get back to the slack key book and finish it, and what if I didn't. Well, I thought, I can make sure that George gets my research material--he'd look after it and maybe even finish the book himself. Now I guess not.

Like most of us, I suspect, my introduction to Mr. Winston's music was his piano playing on the Windham Hill record label. His seasonal albums and their covers had a strong impact on how I steered the cover art for my "Speechless" CD, a scenic portrait rather than a shot of the guitar player against a brick wall or walking down a railroad track.

I enjoyed and respected his work. Talented guy, to say the least. R.I.P.

By far one of my favorite new age pianists. His stuff on Windham Hill was outstanding. The man could make a piano talk like no other.

I had a Windham Hill album that got played a lot, and had the good fortune to hear him play piano in a small venue. A great performance. RIP Mr. Winston.
