A couple of days ago I read a review of a James Taylor concert somewhere in California. The reviewer was a college age, college paper writer. The concert bored him. Taylor's writing was bad, his guitar work adequate. For this young man the saving grace of the concert was Steve Gadd on drums. He knows Steve Gadd is a great jazz drummer.
Among his many criticisms was that Taylor rhymes "home" with "home" and does so many times in this song.
What an idiot.
I just had to get that off my chest. Thank you.

One man's garbage is another man's treasure.
There are music reviewers on NPR: Sound Opinions with Jim DeRogatis and and Greg Kot. I cant listen to them any more. They sound knowledgeable and intelligent and studied and passionate about music. But they came of age during the Punk years. and whenever I listen to something they praise as groundbreaking and important, I think it sounds like garbage. And when the do a review of some artist I know and like and respect, they usually pan it as boring.
So, as learned and passionate as they sound about music, their taste will always be 180 deg from mine.
Change the channel.

This came up in some other browsing. I doubt I would have accepted it if recommended by someone, but I listened thru, and then again. I like the music (I'm not a lyrics person, nor visual).

James could have pleased him by singing "I'm going Home to my Ho"

I did listen to the whole thing. Vocals, neh! The guitar player was interesting.
Just ran across this, these guys have been doing Tina tunes for several years.

As a fellow Taylor fan, I am with you. But for us, James' music was new. We had not heard of the catalog of his contemporaries. We had not experienced the way James' lyrics intimated things about life in a previously unheard fashion, nor how his folk-type songs brought together less-known rhythms, melodic lines, and chords. It reminds me of how I did not appreciate the fandom of Chet Atkins. It was not new to me. He was just one of many great guitarists around when I started listening to music, so I took his abilities and innovations for granted. It is similar to my hearing of Buddy Guy. I had already heard Clapton, Beck, Duane Allman, BB King, Hendrix, Berry, etc. So whatever Buddy brought to the table was not new to me.

Still working on the less than totally solid assumption that I linked to the correct piece, I think that the gig review overall is not really that bad. Rupp does indicate that his fellow concert goers were happier with the show than he was.

The tree has probably been appropriately identified. The forest, maybe not.

WOTE is among my favorite casual listening these days. She is amazing and the group is very complimentary to her vocals.
