"I love traveling. I've been all over and I enjoy the sights I've seen and the people I've met. I can't wait to travel again."
Such were the hopeful words of the indomitable spirit of the 72 year old clerk talking to nobody in particular as she helped throw parcels in the morning.
Nobody was listening but I heard it. Who she now was was reduced to how well she could do the physical job she now held. As it turns out, not very well. Parcels are heavy and the pace is ever frantic.
So nobody was listening.
They traveled she said. She had retired after a lifetime of menial labor managing a sub shop. Traveling and enjoying retirement was always the goal and they had reached it.
And then he had a stroke. Back to work. Living out of town and sleeping alone six nights a week in a low rent upstairs apartment. The indomitable spirit was forced in a new direction. That's life, I guess.
