I stumbled upon this last night. I didn't find it so much funny as insightful. I know they were kidding around, but they discussed some pretty interesting things.
He walked away just like Jim Brown
I thought it was interesting that Steve Martin was self-aware enough -- and probably socially aware enough -- to know to call it quits while he was ahead.
Seinfeld said something like: "I think your comedy would be a hit in any generation" and without hesitation Martins disagrees. Martin is certain his schtick wouldn't work at any time other than the time he did it. I suspect he's probably right.
Seinfeld observed that Martin's act displayed total commitment. I knew what he meant and I agree. Martin's was not a casual delivery. He was all in. And he won in that risk of letting it all hang out.
They're discussing punchlines. Martin mentions an unnamed comic who used the F-bomb. Martin observes that the F-bomb WAS the punchline. It was a thinly veiled criticism of what passes for comedy these days. Weak material? ....just throw a few more F-bombs.
He wouldn't find me very interesting, but I always thought Steve Martin might be one of the most interesting guys in show business to spend some time with.
