My brother gave me a 1990 Gibson Starburst maple cutaway last week. He is a big Little Feat fan and Fred Tackett plays one.
Anyway it's my first all maple guitar and I would love some recs about what strings to use on it that would sound good. Right now it has 5 year old light gauge D'Addario's on it...

Being a “warm sounding” guitar guy, all maple acoustics are usually too bright sounding to my ear, at least with the standard strings that many like.
That being said, I’m still a fan of D’Addario Flat Tops. Other choices that would make my list would be Thomastik Spectrum Bronze, or Martin Retro Ronel as other possibilities.
If you like a brighter sound, virtually anything will work.

I am a "warm sounding" guy myself. Thanks for the input.

I second the suggestion about Martin Retro Monel strings. GHS Vintage Bronze have, as I recall, a pretty warm tone.

Good recommendation Joe.
The other that came to me was D'Addario Flattops. Semi flat phosphor bronze that sound "broken in" from day one. Stay away from 80/20 bronze. Medium gauge will be warmer than light.

Another couple (since Flat Tops are hard to find in stores) DR Rare and Ernie Ball Earthwood Phosphor Bronze.

Oops! Yes I missed that bit.

I order from Just Strings and they have quick service and decent prices. Their House Brand strings are fine and what I use in the shop for generic acoustic or electric strings.

Thanks for the recommendations! I use Martin Retros on my 00-15M and like them.
Would mediums be a problem on the Gibson if it had been setup with .12 lights?

Maybe, depends on the way the setup was done. Some guitars all that is needed is a truss rod adjustment. Won't hurt anything to try the mediums.

Another possibility is True Mediums. Most of the string companies have them. You can get the Martin Retros in that gauge with Lawrence Juber’s signature set LJ’s Choice. I use those on a couple guitars. Nice volume and the 5, 4, 3 strings being light make for easy fingerpicking, while the medium 6, 2, 1 give added oomph to flatpicking. D’Addario, GHS, Pearse, and others have them in 80/20, PB, & Monel.

Light gauge trebles with medium basses.
