My fav place, HEY NONNY, in Arlington Heights is having another songwriting contest. They did it last year. I entered then and made it to the finals. They have 3 nights of preliminaries with 14 songs each night. Then the top 4 (based on staff and audience voting) from each night make it to the finals. It's very cool. The preliminaries have a full house in the music room. About 75 people. The finals, they opened up the wall tween the performance area and the restaurant. About 150 in attendance that night. It was great fun, and an honor to be included in the Finals.
So they are doing it again this year. And you have to write a song about the NW suburbs in some way or other. This year I chose to work up a song about the local forest preserve. Here's the song I just submitted:
I had fun with the process. This is the first time I used my new Zoom R20 multitrack recorder. The camera is my iPhone 14. The audio is a combination of the phone audio (with a Shure MV88 stereo mic), a dynamic vocal mic, a Neumann K184 mic pointed to the guitar, and a direct input from the Skysonic pickup in the guitar. The Zoom records each track separately as a WAV file. I bring them all into Audacity and balance them out. I used a little reverb on the vocal and guitar mic. Then I bring the video and audio elements into Cyberlink Power Director (video edit software) and then produce an mp4 file.
First time I've used all these components together. Took some finagling to get it right. But I'm happy with the video result.
I submitted the song to the contest. Deadline is August 5th. But I'll be on vacation next week and didn't want to linger.
