I've been using these things for years: I don't like them. They might be light, but the U thing (part the guitar sets on) spins around and/or falls from the stand, they are a pain to transport and they are a pain to carry around. Mine thankfully broke, so I got a new stand today. This one: herculesstands.com/international/products/fretted-and-bowed-instrument/guitar/single-stands-(1)/gs414b-plus/I never put a whole lot of thought into guitar stands, but I'm glad I did today. It is stable, it folds up nicely, and I feel a whole lot safer using this stand than the former. I paid a lot more, but I got a stand where a designer put some thought into it. So what do you folks use for guitar stands? Or trombone stands?

I have one of these in my music room. Lots of guitars in a smaller space. I have one like this for my jam. Works great, and folds up really small. Surprisingly stable as well.

That's the one I always used onstage Todd, mine was a Hamilton. You can spread the legs way out if need be to keep it stable and the one piece design is much easier to pack and move. I still have it open on the shop floor as a safe, quick place to put a guitar out of the way while while clearing my bench. I have two of these for storing caseless guitars.

Those are very good stands, Todd. I bought one for Fiddlerina for her baritone ukulele. They let the instrument hang in a way that keeps the center of gravity vary low. Much safer. My stands are the Hamilton KB38 model. The Hercules model you have wasn’t available when I bought mine. (Click image for specs and price) We used those exclusively at Stars Guitars. The reason was a guitar maker in California’s Bay Area discovered during an earthquake that guitars on Hamilton KB38 stands didn’t fall over and break. Guitars on all the other stands fell and were broken during the quake. I can’t remember the guitar maker’s name. I think it was Gary something. Very expensive highly prized guitars. The maker died unexpectedly and way prematurely. Someone here will remember the name.

That be the one. Adjust it so the bottom of the guitar just clears the ground.

So what do you folks use for guitar stands? Or trombone stands? I have some of each of those and I agree that the "hang by the neck" style is the better stand. But what I use performing is a two-guitar folding rack. The guitar is held at the lower bout and only stablized by an upper neck holder. I find these to be the most stable way to hold guitars on stage. It literally cannot be knocked over.

I have one like this for my jam. Works great, and folds up really small. Surprisingly stable as well. I have one like that except it is black ABS composite. Also available in red and blue. Cheaper than the wood one and, I think, more durable. A friend's wooden one broke quickly. They are made by Cooperstands and sold by Sweetwater and others. Fold small enough to fit in most hard cases.

I get a guitar in and pick up the case and wonder why they need a boat anchor in there. Everything but the kitchen sink is crammed in that case and now it weights a ton. How about a small backpack or shoulder bag? Plenty of room for extra everything without weighting the case down until the handle breaks. Case in one hand, bag over shoulder and away you go.

Todd, I have both of the stands that you show and they each have their uses. I bought the Hercules for my U-bass when I couldn't find anything else that would work, but I do really like it for a variety of instruments. I haven't been playing out for a while, so stands don't matter a lot. That may change soon, as my choir director is making noises about using more instruments. Not sure that I want to go back to hauling gear around.

Because these weigh almost nothing, and take up no room, and when I’m taking two instruments somewhere, carrying a third bag/object is a PITA. So I buy gig bags with big pockets, and stuff them full.
