I want to construct a 10 song repertoire for playing outside gigs. I do this at least once a month near summer, and have no problem using songs out of my current repertoire, but feel too many of the songs I sing are not main stream enough to be totally recognizable. It works, but I feel I would be more hirable if I built my sets around say 10 very common songs then added on my less familiar tunes like Buck Owens Welfare line or Dead tunes like

What is the age range of your audience, Doc?

Grade school to retirement home. Still oughta be ten universal songs.

"Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffet would be familiar to the 35 to 70 age group.
"What a Wonderful World" Louis Armstrong - written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss - probably known by those age ten to 100.

Who is Jimmy Buffet?
(Actually, I know who he is--I just don't much care for him. On the other hand, I'm outside that demographic, so I'm entitled to my indifference.)

Interestingly, Jimmy is not related to Warren Buffett.

Decent resources here. Crowd pleasers, I think. You'll have to find the songs to learn them.

Doc, I don’t think you need to worry about this at all. Fiddlerina and I play for people of all ages all the time and we never do anything they might have heard on the radio.
Choose music you like. Do some fancy gittar numbers and some songs that you love to sing or have meaning to you. Those are the songs that will get the best response and keep them wanting more.
The older folks seem to prefer up tempo tunes to ballads. If they like you and your music they’ll want you back and will start asking for the tunes you do.
Trust yourself, your ability, and taste. They’ll appreciate it.

Before I got all smart-mouthy above, I had something like Mark's reaction--the tunes that will go across best are the ones you can sell best, which probably means the ones you enjoy playing.
Not that it hurts to notice the kind of tunes a given audience likes--my late partner Dan was always aware of his crowd (a necessity for a bar-band vet) and tailored his sets accordingly. But he still liked to throw a curve every once in a while and give 'em what they turned out to like despite its lack of utter familiarity.

Two songs that I could count on to be pleasers no matter the venue or audience:
-- "Here Comes the Sun"
-- "For What It's Worth"
Some of the songs on the list Howard posted I would not do as a solo guitarist/singer because they, to me, have a signature guitar lick that doesn't really work w/o a band behind it (such as "Brown Eyed Girl").

I think those are easy to eliminate, Billiam. One could always play those licks on a kazoo, too.

I think "Margaritaville" is close to a perfect song, but having built several giant flip-flop statues for Margaritaville resorts (including 4' long poptop) I have a real love-hate relationship with the Buffett empire.

I still remember when Buffett was just a guy with a guitar who played folk clubs like The Quiet Knight in Chicago and played some songs he’d written. Margaritaville was one of them.

I think I’m a pretty good guitar picker, then I hear that Doug Smith piece and think ‘forget it. ‘
