Howard's hung over and asked me to start the daily for him. Good morning. We have church at 10:00. Diane is playing the prelude on solo bells. Otherwise we don't have much planned.
Have a good day.

I watched Once Were Brothers last night. It was just one side of the story of The Band, but a very interesting side. Beyond banana pancakes, there are no plans for the day. Maybe we’ll make some. Maybe not. Howard is always hung over.

Morning. I’ve been awake since 3:40. Put the Brisket on the smoker, set for 200 degrees. Nita is making a bean bake to go with it, and some cornbread, and a Cesar salad. Our friends are bringing desert. It’s just the flat so it shouldn’t take more than 10-12 hours to cook. It’s already smelling good. I’ll try to nap this morning,

I didn't know that one existed. I still have Levon Helm's book, This Wheel's on Fire, on my bookshelf. I suspect they paint very different pictures.

I still have Levon Helm's book, This Wheel's on Fire, on my bookshelf. I suspect they paint very different pictures. Probably. This was told from Robertson’s point of view and there were lots of interesting people telling anecdotes. I really enjoyed it. I haven’t read Helm’s book, but the film did touch on the fallout between Robertson and Helm. The sad thing about watching it was knowing that all but one, Garth Hudson, of those talented guys are gone. It was quite a band.

I had a shower and a shave and I'm feeling much better—no dizziness or nausea, and no migraine. About to make coffee and have some breakfast. It will be a hot one in Brooklyn today. Plans are to do some grocery shopping, a load of laundry, and then head over to the park for a picnic with longtime friends who moved back to Spain a few years ago and have spent 6 weeks in New York visiting family and friends. They are traveling to see parents in Connecticut tomorrow and will spend the week there before flying back to Madrid, so this is our last hurrah until next year. Their kids (one is the same age as mine, one three years younger) have grown up so much in the years since they relocated that it's startling.
Have always loved The Band and their music. There was quite a bit of contention between Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm, regarding song writing credits, hard drug use, and more. Too bad; they broke up way too soon, although they had been together and touring for almost two decades—longer than the Beatles were together. I plan to read both memoirs—Robertson's and Helms'. BTW, I also saw "Once Were Brothers," and I have to say that Robbie Robertson was a gifted storyteller.
That's about it. Have a good day, all. Careful with that demon liquor.

Eric and I will get together again today. While I was able to slow down the audio recording we have for Good Time Charlie and Midnight Hour Blues, I can't fix the video. So today we will try to re-record either or both of these to see if we can get something better than last time. If my thumb refuses to cooperate, then we will just have a nice practice session.

The truth isn't always in the middle but with regard to Helm versus Robertson, I suspect it is. After The Last Waltz, the other guys all regrouped without inviting Robertson. I think that says something about their bandmates' view.
As an aside, it's ironic that as rock stars drop like flies, Keith Richards is still cruising along.
PS: Keith Richards' memoir was very entertaining. In it, he recounts how publicists wanted to make Jagger the star of the group. When the group was in Tempe for a concert, the electronic signboard identified them as Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. Richards refused to perform until the sign was changed to identify the group simply as The Rolling Stones.
Something similar occurred with The Band. An early manager tried to make Robertson the star. The other guys resented it, and not without reason. Robertson and Jagger both acquiesced in the efforts to make them the star. They both issued solo recordings that sank like stones. In both cases the good music depended on collaboration and without it the "stars" weren't much.

Keef and Willie Nelson are concerned about the kind of world Millennials are going to leave them.

Of course, he’d almost have to be. He is 79. If you catch a view of his fingers, the joints look like knots on a tree. I guess the key is to love what you do. The movie makes quite a lot of the Helms/Robertson relationship and he gives Levon credit as his mentor from the days with Ronnie Hawkins. There is also mention of drugs and how they changed Helms. Who knows? I suspect you are correct about the truth being somewhere in the middle.

We played to the “throngs of adoring fans”* yesterday. The weather under the market barn awning wasn’t too bad. Had taken out my Blueridge slope shoulder as a backup guitar only to find that the b-band pickup system some idiot luthier installed (that would be me) has developed a ground hum, so I’ll have to dive into that sometime soon. Today will be pretty low key after the busy day yesterday.
*Todd and sound man Robert (and they talked sound reinforcement more than listened) oh, the joys of being cheap entertainment. ;-)

Taking great pains this morning to eat very little, as lunch will be bountiful -- pig roast w/ sweet corn and baked beans at the seaplane base in Lino Lakes. Rain is likely but the event, an annual fundraiser, is inside a large hangar so all should be well. I'm thinking of bringing along a bottle of this stuff, which I tried for the first time the other day, and I really like it.

In both cases the good music depended on collaboration and without it the "stars" weren't much. The album "Robbie Robertson" did pretty well (certified gold, 4 songs in the Billboard mainstream rock charts), and is a very good album. Rick Danko and Garth Hudson both play on a song. A difference between Robertson and Jagger was Robertson's solo career started ten years after he left The Band, while Jagger has always been a part of The Rolling Stones. Robertson went on to be pretty successful scoring movie soundtracks (I think all with Scorsese). He went in a different direction. I highly suggest checking out the Levon Helm documentary, "Ain't In It For My Health." levonhelmfilm.com/
