I understood the discussion to critique legislators who forsake their oaths of office so that they can remain in power, i.e. Trump toadies refusing to confirm Biden's win. Thank goodness Mike Pence did not jump on board. I can't imagine what would have happened. If Pence had, I suppose the question of the validity of the election could be left to the U.S. supreme court. Is that how you think the discussion indicated a lack of trust in the justice system? If so, I probably agree. The checks and balances of government (judicial, executive and legislative) do not work when individuals in all three branches fall in line to stay in power or to receive a monetary payoff. I like Burns' idyllic perception that the USA holds a unique position in the world, but I too share his concerns. Honesty and doing the right thing are not the priorities that they once were.
