Some friend on fb posted this picture of Eric Clapton playing in a parking lot in Skokie, IL in 1969 for the opening of a clothes boutique. He reportedly got free jeans out of the deal.

Interesting. Was already a rock god superstar by then.

From the Royal Albert Hall in 1968, to a parking lot in IL in 1969. Oh, how the mighty fell.

I can't testify to the authenticity of the photo.

When this particular bit of news was released a few years ago, I decided that EC was not "God" (not that I ever though so), that in terms of humanity he registered about a 5% out of 100 on my Respect-o-Meter, the bloody wanker, and that's just because he's a pretty decent guitarist.

I am sure when Eric learns how you feel he will mend his ways.
I saw the Kingston Trio at an outdoor mall in Calumet City, IL back in the 80s. They were set up in the middle of the mall, outside, playing Tom Dooley as crowds of shoppers trudged by. I found it kind of sad. Maybe they got free jeans or coffee beans.

As for Clapton, there's a lot of silent antipathy towards minorities in the US. People have learned not to voice such things. I'm not sure that's a big moral improvement. And Clapton was drunk. I've said things I regretted when I was drunk.

Clapton was/is a very very good guitarist. He also has battled serious substance abuse issues. His social and political beliefs are a anathema to me. Still, when Layla or Sunshine of your love comes on the radio, I turn it up.

I was always instructed in college that one must learn to separate the artist from the art. I get that, but I still find certain personality traits distasteful. Like racism, misogyny, homophobia, and it casts a pall on the work of some artists for me. Of course, my opinions on these things don't matter to anyone but me, anyway.
Chacun à son goût.

It was at House of Lewis, a hip fashionable boutique and it was done a couple days before the one & only tour with Blind Faith took place shortly after the breakup of Cream in 1969. This is according to WTTW News.
