I heard a story on NPR, Market Place, where UPS is buying a Return Shipping outlet store company. And the story also said that 20 to 30% of things bought on-line are returned.
I'm surprised, but I have to admit I have succumbed to the phenomena in that I've returned a handfull of items recently that I decided I didn't like or want.

I'm pretty fussy about mail order clothing and shoes fitting. Leave the tags on and try it on quickly and if it ain't right back it goes. None of this walking around in shoes for a week before returning them crap. I notice when ordering power tools and/or electronics a higher percentage of items that look new but the packaging doesn't look quite OEM.
Musicians are pretty bad. I remember when Musician's Friend was just becoming a thing that gigging band guys would routinely buy gear, use it for a big wedding gig or whatever, then return the stuff within the 30 day window. Just screws it up for everyone else IMO.

I recently bought some shoes online that didn’t fit. For the returns, I had the option of taking the shoes to Game Stop, Ulta Beauty or a couple of other retail stores. I just walked in, handed the shoe boxes over and got an email almost immediately informing me my return had been processed and the refund credited to my card.

I ordered some bridge pins from Elderly. They sent the wrong ones so I returned them in exchange for the correct ones. A few days later I got a second set. Being relatively honest, I returned them. A week later I got them back. I called Elderly and they said send them back. We will take care of it here. A few days after, I got another set of the pins. I called again and they said, just keep them. It’s costing us more in postage than it’s worth.

Well, I have had cookies go on mystery journeys before, too.
