In the days of yore there was a football team called "Big Red", the University of Nebraska "Cornhuskers". From 1973 to 1997 Big Red ruled the Big 8 like a ravenous T-Rex and won FIVE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! And the coach of the Pride of Nebraska during that golden era was Tom Osborne.
Every football year for 25 years, 100,000 plus Nebraskans would don red and gather in Husker Stadium and mightily cheer on the rolling Big Red as they demolished the before them helpless. And coach Tom Osborne would smile.
(and since coach Tom Osborne retired, Big Red ain't won shit)

My first father-in-law bought his Nebraska football tickets in 1963 in the Devaney era, so I got to be one of those sitting in the stadium for a few games each season when I was living close by. Coach Osborne seemed to b a really good guy. I may or may not have done an itty bit of pro bono work for Teammates, a mentoring program he set up. Coach Osborne became Representative Osborne after he retired from coaching. Coach Osborne was succeeded by Frank Solich, who suffered the fate of pretty much anyone who succeeds a legend; he did not last long. While he was coach, the sand volleyball team I was on played his family's team. They were really good and beat us handily, but my biggest takeaway was how supportive and positive everyone on his team was (as opposed to the angry glares I always received from my teammates).
