Decades after being written, Fast Car wins CMA song of the year. I thought sound couldn't escape a vacuum?

Great tune and I love Chapman's voice. She did "The Times They Are Changing" for the Bob Dylan TV special and brought the house down.
Fast Car is one of those songs that paints a vivid picture within the first verse.

A great ballad. Nice that it is being recognized again.
I don't know what John means by "I thought sound couldn't escape a vacuum?"
Interesting comparison between Combs and Chapman. Chapman's version is superior in every way, yet it won no country music award. Combs does a nice job: he has a pleasant voice and didn't screw up, but it is just a good attempt to copy Chapman's original, though his voice is not as expressive. He brings nothing new to the song, except that his name is associated with country music. If I were Combs, it would be an odd sensation to receive an award for copying a song that someone else wrote and sung better than me. I would guess it has happened many times before, but no particular instances come to mind.
The award reflects the change in the definition of "country" that has occurred over the last five years or so. It is broadening, to include pop, rap, and hip-hop. It had long ago incorporated rock and blues.

From Billboard:
“Oh man, ‘Fast Car’ has surprised me more than you can imagine. Tracy Chapman wrote this perfect song that that I first heard with my dad and it has stayed with me since,” Combs tells Billboard exclusively. “I have played it in my live show now for six-plus years and everyone — I mean everyone — across all these stadiums relates to this song and sings along. That’s the gift of a supernatural song writer. The success of my cover is unreal and I think it’s so cool that Tracy is getting recognized and has reached new milestones. I love that she is out there feeling all the love and that she gave me a shout-out! Thank you, Tracy!”

Strangely enough I never new all the lyrics when Tracy sang it. Certainly love her voice. Combs voice is easier to follow, yet it doesn't fit the lyric (as a male). Never saw Tracy's video with lyrics, so I wasn't able to fully follow the story before.
Quite poignant.
