From the New York Times: You can put ketchup on a burger or fries, sure. It’s a key ingredient in Russian salad dressing and meatloaf. Ketchup was once even declared a vegetable by the U.S. Agriculture Department under President Ronald Reagan. Now a new video from Heinz insists that “runners everywhere are using Heinz ketchup packets on their runs.” The company has also created running routes in the shape of its branded keystone logo in several cities, including New York, marking restaurants where ketchup packets are available for eager runners to grab. But are runners in fact suddenly consuming ketchup? So much of it that they need to stop at fast food joints to reload? And if so, is that really a good idea? Nutritionists are dubious. “I’m totally skeptical,” said Amy Stephens, a sports dietitian for the New York University track team. www.nytimes.com/2023/11/09/sports/heinz-tomato-ketchup-running.htmlUntil I see more evidence, I'm going to stick with A-1 Steak Sauce when I run.

Did you know that Heinz Ketchup made in Canada and Heinz Ketchup made in the USA have different ingredients? The Canadian Heinz has no sugar or preservatives, whereas USA Heinz is loaded with both.

Kind of like when I lived close to the Mexican border - Coca Cola made in Mexico has better ingredients than the US-made Coke.

What's the difference between ketchup and catsup, besides the vast chasm in spelling?

"The origins of both catsup and ketchup can be traced back to Southeast Asia, where they evolved from a fermented fish sauce called ke-tsiap. Over time, Western explorers brought the sauce to their homelands and adapted it to their palates, leading to the development of distinct versions. It is crucial to note the impact of the historical context on the evolution of these two condiments, as they went through numerous alterations to adapt to changing tastes and preferences.
"A critical factor that differentiates catsup and ketchup is their composition. While ketchup predominantly contains tomatoes and vinegar, catsup has a thinner consistency and may include other ingredients such as mushrooms, walnuts, or anchovies. Regional usage of these condiments further complicates the distinction, with some countries using the terms interchangeably. As a result, deciphering the differences between catsup and ketchup requires an exploration of their historical evolution and modern-day usage."

"Ketchup and catsup are simply two different spellings for the same thing: a modern, Westernized version of a condiment that European traders were introduced to while visiting the Far East in the late 17th century."

In Canada you can get ketchup-flavored potato chips. They're quite tasty.

The Ketchup Advisory Board frowns on ketchup-flavored potato chips. It has no objection to Mexican Coca Cola.

Ketchup does have natural mellowing agents, maybe you aren't getting enough ketchup.
In a search for non-corn syrup based ketchup in the USA, we came across Chef brand ketchup (from ireland) in an international foods market when we lived in st louis. It has real sugar and more importantly, malt vinegar instead of something just generically white. It is fantastic on fries and burgers. The issue is, it is pricey to get here in the states. I used to get it from an Irish imports place in New York, but now it can be ordered on Amazon.
Treat yourself some time. It is really good.

Despite the profit-centered claims of those milk the cash cow that is American Food Worries, corn fructose is just another sweetener, no better, no worse (but if anything, possibly better). But, fad food health claims are the single most profitable publishing niche once you leave the Romance aisle. And that goes double for the jungle of nonsense that has come to fill the aisles of the internet. Yes, there are a billion websites proclaiming whatever sells and satisfies: magic fat loss, the secret herb that will cure high blood pressure and cholesterol, what American medicine doesn't want you to know, and how the evil that is corn syrup is the cause of all the fat unhealthy sick people in this country. But, none of this gibberish will be from a responsible source that relies on known science and peer-reviewed studies. Here is a nice summation of what is known about sugars and corn syrup from Popular Science (it is a readable general source that provides links to more detailed ones): www.popsci.com/high-fructose-corn-syrup-sugar/(I know this won't convince believers, nothing does. It is provided only as a counter-point to series of statements I regard to be as dubious as they are prevalent.)

I have purchased Heinz Simply Ketchup, and I see Hunt's has something similar. No HFCS, but I assume regular white vinegar.

The tomato ketchup that I like the most at the moment is from Leon. Not too sweet. Water, Tomato Paste (23%), Red Wine Vinegar, Demerara Sugar, Red Pepper (2.5%), Sun-Dried Tomatoes (2.5%) (Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Salt), Rapeseed Oil, Cornflour, Salt, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Garlic Purée, Clove, Black Pepper
Occasionally, I add a little sriracha or tabasco sauce to it.
Mushroom ketchup is nice to have in the kitchen too.

OK, corn farmer, next you'll be telling me ethanol's just fine, too. There are several promising studies still in the early phases that do indicate that modest ingestions of ethanol improve not just engine performance but male performance, as well. And the activity is not just in the nether regions, but up on top, also. After only three weeks in the study I'm participating in, I have noticed significant hair regrowth. It isn't hair like I used to have, rather it is fine, silky cream-colored hair much like you would see on a corn cob, but, it is hair. And it seems to be exhibiting early signs of sentience as well. This is exciting stuff!
