A tip of the hat to the late actor Dwight Frye, the original Renfield in the 1931 production of Dracula. He was in my thoughts this morning. Ten days ago was the 80th anniversary of his death.
"Spiders, Master!"
Have a pleasant day, all.

It's coming up on that time of year again.
I know it's our job. We're paid to do it. And since you want your holiday packages and cards, and you're using us to deliver them, we'll be doing our best.
But there are things you could do -- and if it bothers you to be doing them for someone being paid to do their job, then think of it this way: You'll be doing them, not for your well-paid mailman, but for yourself and your neighbors so that the whole process will be expedited.
1. Clear snow away from your mailboxes and walkways.
2. Keep your house numbers and mailbox numbers visible (I know they're GREAT places to hang holiday decorations, but that comes at a cost of mail and package delay).
3. Don't park near your mailbox. "In front of" is obvious. "Near" is less obvious -- but you should be aware of how much sliding postal vehicles do on ice.
4. The era of the "mailbox" is over. We all should have receptacles appropriate to the amount of online shopping we do. It seems to be the confounding way of things that the folks with the longest driveways and the biggest Amazon accounts have the tiniest mailboxes. A mailbox should at least be large enough to accommodate any small parcel you're ordering. We'll bring the big boxes to your door.
We love our work, but it gets hard at this time of year. Most of us will be working 80 hour weeks and well into the night (especially since it's now dark at 5PM)

John, I promise I'll keep the snow away from our mailbox and walkways. Seriously, you've made me realize we haven't been very thoughtful about such things. Our house number is never very visible. Our mailbox is small. I'll try to make a few changes.
Good morning, everyone. It's been a pleasantly busy week but today the calendar is blank. I have no excuse for not tackling some of the weeds that have accumulated. If I work at it, maybe I'll find an excuse.
Enjoy your day.

The snowplows took it out one year and I had to get creative. The mailpost was sheared in half, so I got a 3’ iron rod and drilled a 1.5’ hole in the bottom post still in the ground and a 1.5’ hole in the top half. When the two came together, the top half could spin freely around the bottom post. So the next time the plow hit it, it would just spin. Two years later it happened again and that time it spun around and remained in tact.

It’s morning, and I’ve been awake since 4:00. Need to winterize the trailer this morning, then get it put away in the garage. Then maybe a nap. Yesterdays plumbing repair turned out to be more extensive than expected. Hopefully it’s all good now.
Looks like we will only have 11 for Thanksgiving. Just gphave a few items to get from the store and then we should be set. Cooking some of the sides the day before should make it manageable. Trad turkey dinner.

Good morning.
27F-44F mostly cloudy.
Clients this morning and then errands with DaWife. She is on a vacation week so I'll have to bribe her with lunch to get her out of the house.

Johnny reminds me of Chet Baker in that pic. Both heavy druggies and look like it.
I ran into Chet Baker in an abandoned storefront on Canal Street years ago. He was playing for coins and selling a Christmas music cassette (which I bought)

We've learned that younger daughter will join us for Thanksgiving after all so we'll have the complete nuclear family. Great news.

I believe the label "nuclear family" originated during the Atomic Age.

Good morning. Haven't been around for a while but now I'm back. No real reason for my absence, just wanted a break. Meanwhile life goes on.

It was a real treat to see him but he should have been filling the Civic Opera House instead of playing for a small group in a bar. What a monstrous talent. On edit: I think that’s where I saw Horace Silver too.

Morning.
Picked up a 125 gallon aquarium yesterday (picked up... a 125 gallon tank is six feet long and weighs a tisch over 200 lbs. Gus and I had our hands full moving it... those suction cup handle things were life savers (probably literal so in my case). Someone was moving and I got it for free. Tank free, fish extra/

"I believe the label 'nuclear family' originated during the Atomic Age."
I wouldn't be surprised. But I was recently reading a history of the different subcultures in colonial America. I'm mostly a product of southern culture. There the word "family" without a modifier tended to encompass uncles, aunts, cousins and shirttail kin. They must have had some modifier equivalent to "nuclear" to narrow things down.

I've known some "nuclear" families. Don't want to be anywhere near them when they blow.

I think Howard was making a joke. He intended to refer to the nucular family.

In truth, Don, I was being facetious.

I'm seeing great in my cataractless eye today. Finishing stuff up in Cedar Rapids then it's off to Des Moines. The Braille School is having an event and I'm always asked to write a song with every kid's name in it. So I get a hotel stay, sing one song, and paid well for it then go home tomorrow. This is the first time since Covid. I've always called it my annual one-song gig.
