I bought mine before I went to work at GC. A wonderful tool. Since you don’t change strings, you might not see the benefits.

They usually go on a power screw driver. At least, that’s how I have seen them used. You might want one because it makes string changes quicker & easier—especially if you do a lot of string changes. I have an Ernie Ball power winder that I use quite a bit. I also have a Marty Reynolds winder and I use it a lot. Different strokes. If you only change a set of strings every 2-3 months, you can live without it. If you change 15-20 sets a week, it might come in handy. It makes 12-string changes a lot easier.

It is as John and LJ said. At Stars Guitars we had one on an electric screwdriver that was made for the purpose. There was a Peterson strobe tuner sitting on the bench so you could easily see when the new string reached correct pitch. It got a lot of use.
At home I always use a handmade Reynolds winder.

It is as John and LJ said. I think that statement sums up most things pretty nicely! 😊

As long as the drill is reversible I would use it. I currently use a hand winder which is more than acceptable, a motorized device would speed things along.

I won't say you shouldn't use one. As long as one is careful about not rubbing the winder head against the headstock and marring the finish. This mean keeping the winder aligned parallel to the button shaft. Keeping the guitar stable while using the string winder to put the new set on is the difficult part.
At MY bench I can do a 6 string pin bridge acoustic in 3 minutes strings off to strings on using my string winder. But that is because I have a neck vise and the right tools. Most people could do it that fast if they had my bench setup. Not having to hold on to the guitar and having both hands free makes a huge difference. If I had to do it the way most of you do I would probably be slower at it than you.
