I got back from a conference in Florida last night. The conference was great. The weather was perfect, I spent time on the beach and met a lot of new and interesting people. I'm glad I went. But I will say that I'm not into airports and flying. When I was a kid flying was a big deal. We'd get all dressed up and get served a meal on the plane. 50 years later it's not the same. Looks like the people who were sitting across the aisle from me agree:

When I was a kid my parents took me to Hawaii on Pan Am. We were in first class. The stewardess’s took me up to meet the pilots, and show me the cockpit, and then fir our meals desert, this I remember vividly, they flamed and served cherries jubilee AT OUR SEAT. Lighting ipa fire at 35000 feet. Crazy eh? Yep, times have changed.

My dad was a young executive salesman - BWIA Airline. I could fly - free - any airline in the United States or Canada. I would go to with the weekend for two days. Sometimes I just went to the airport and I decided to go to Chicago/Boston/Toronto/more - First Class. All of the suits at First Class and I had jeans and sandals and long hair too. It was a lot different back in the 50s in the 60s.... eh?

I have done a lot of flying in both private and commercial aircraft. I prefer to keep my feet on the ground now.

My wife and I are pretty much in sync on retirement preferences. One difference is that she wants to make some long trips that require many hours in a plane, while I don't. Part of it is that I did a lot of foreign travel when I was young. That itch has been thoroughly scratched. The bigger reason that I find planes and airports so unpleasant that most proposed trips flunk the cost-benefit analysis.

If you don't mind spending a few dineros, a nice experience can still be had.

I can’t stand it. I really can’t stand the pajama trend. People wearing pajamas and slippers to the grocery store etc. Geez!

My first flight was in high school when my mother and I flew from Chicago to Phoenix to visit my sister. The L1011 had a bar and lounge area in coach. I got a Coke and sat on a bench and looked out the windows.

We've done three trips involving flying this year. The first two went OK, but were shorter trips. The third one almost put me off flying for good. Not informed of a delay until we were already at the airport. They had to have known well before that. The delay resulted in having to re-book our connecting flight, making it two more flights instead of one. Lost luggage that didn't get delivered until the next evening. Arrived at our hotel at 2:45 AM. On the return there were more delays and more rescheduling. Everybody was on the plane in Dallas (not our original route) when the airline decided that we all had to get off because the pilot and co-pilot would go over their maximum hours. Rescheduled for the next morning. Without luggage again because we weren't allowed to retrieve checked baggage. They sent us to a low end hotel 15 miles from the airport where there were no rooms available. Got sent from there to another low end hotel even farther from the airport. Able to take a shower and get about 3 hours of sleep before heading back to the airport. Flights are expensive and awful. Buying a ticket will probably get you there. You just don't know when or what route you'll take.
Also, seats have become smaller. Because of baggage fees and lost luggage problems, passengers tend to carry on everything. If only the airlines would enforce carry-on size limits, that would help with the chaos.

A couple years ago when very few people were flying, the airlines were cobbling routes together. We flew from Minnesota to Tucson for my brother-in-law's funeral (masked the entire time) and the shortest quickest flight we could get had a layover in Seattle.

I used to fly pretty often for work. Now I haven’t flown since 2001 and probably will never fly again. I just don’t want to deal with any of what air travel has become.
My parents never flew when I was young. Dad used to take business trips on the train. We’d see him off at the busy Rock Island depot. Later on, he would fly. We’d take him to the airport, wait for the plane to arrive (a DC3), and watch on the observation deck as the plane taxied and rose. The plane would remain in view for another five minutes.
I always loved being in the air and always tried to get a window seat. Very few things compare to watching the world from an airplane window on a clear day. In later years, I often flew on one of the corporate planes, taking off and landing at private terminals. That is the way to fly. Plush leather seats, carpeted cabin, stocked bar, no hassle.

So many great memories of flying with my old man when he was a corporate pilot and had free access to a Beech Twin Bonanza. On Saturday mornings, we would often "exercise the airplane." One memory I'll never forget is taking off from La Crosse to return to Eau Claire on an overcast day, late in the afternoon, IFR flight plan. We climbed through the soup and when we broke out of it, as far as you could see, in every direction, was a carpet of bright pink cumulus puffballs, as the sun was just setting. OMG, ethereal!
