My darlin wife likes the idea of cooking, but not the act. As a result she has purchased, (and we now have a very lightly used) Kitchen Aide mixer, pasta maker, rice steamer, instant pot, air fryer, crock pot, blender, bread maker, food processor, deep fryer, and Dutch oven. I suspect and hope that when she retires things will change.

David, I don't think Dutch ovens belong on that list. They're grade-A cooking gear even for those who aren't interested in gadgets. Wish I had a bigger one.

Most men do.

I love mine and use it constantly. I think I'd have to blow the dust off my microwave if I were to use it. They become really useful when you stop thinking of it as a convection oven instead of a fryer. It's perfect for things like warming up pizza, and I did a nice Iowa chop in it last night. Has me thinking, how do fare during the holidays. In your heart, I mean. Not food fare. Thanks, Evan. You'll understand when I say I don't move on, but I continue to move forward.

I did a nice Iowa chop in it last night. I wasn't sure whether "Iowa Chop" was a main course or a dance move or a haircut so went Googling www.iowafarmbureau.com/Article/The-fascinating-history-of-the-Iowa-ChopWhat is the Iowa Chop? The Iowa Chop is a center-cut loin that’s over 1 inch thick, known for its quality, tenderness and versatility.
The name “Iowa Chop” isn’t as common outside of the state. Instead, they are often called Porterhouse chops - a nod to the Porterhouse beef steak.
I’ve learned that the Iowa Chop boasts a fascinating history. Surprisingly, it’s also an important piece of women’s history in Iowa.
Iowa pork farmers first coined the name “Iowa Chop” in 1976. The Iowa Porkettes, a former statewide organization for farm woman, launched a major statewide marketing campaign in the mid ‘70s to promote the Iowa Chop, according to University of Illinois ag historian Jenny Barker Devine.
Back then, most farm women couldn’t get involved in the business or leadership side of raising pork (unless their husbands approved). However, farm women still wanted to support their farms and their livelihoods.
The Iowa Porkettes joined together with a goal of promoting pork as a high-quality, nutritious protein to urban consumers.
The women volunteered (without compensation) to visit grocery stores and give out pork samples and recipe ideas. They met with butchers and restaurant owners (who were, most often, men) to request adding the Iowa Chop to their menus.
The Washington County Porkettes even came up with a catchy slogan for newspaper and radio ads, “Hop on the top with the Iowa Chop.”
By the end of 1977, more than 160 Iowa restaurants featured Iowa Chops on the menu. Meat counters across the state reported increased customer demand for Iowa Chops. In addition, the Iowa Chop was included on the U.S. House of Representatives’ menu in Washington.
Now 50 years later, we can still see that the Iowa Porkettes’ voluntary efforts paid off. We can order Iowa Chops at the meat counter or on a restaurant menu, or try an Iowa Chop recipe from a social media influencer.
Next time you serve Iowa Chops to impress your guests, use this little bit of trivia as a conversation starter.
Let’s all be ambassadors for Iowa farmers, who work every day to raise high-quality, nutritious pork while providing the best possible care for their animals and the environment.

Our band, Castle Ridge, used to get hired every year to perform for the World Pork Expo. There was a farm a few miles east of the Iowa State Fairgrounds where they would clear out an enormous pole barn and invite all the world’s pork buyers for a fancy sit-down dinner.
We’d set up just outside the entrance under a pop-up gazebo with our big sound system (the one we used to bring to Garrison for IJam) And hold forth for several hours. We sold lots of CDs and buyers from China, Japan, Eastern Europe, Africa, Central and South America, pretty much anywhere pork is consumed would stand and listen or want their pictures taken with us. Often they’d grab our western hats from our heads and wear them standing next to us while we played. We never missed a beat.
We were very well compensated for this and always looked forward to it. Eventually there was a change in the structure of the Iowa Pork Council and they stopped hiring us. But the pork buyers were always very enthusiastic.
Iowa is the pork capital of the world.

All this gadget talk...
We got an Insta-pot over a year ago and still haven't used it.
But Wendy bought a little rechargeable frother recently and that thing is the bomb. Great for mixing up your hot chocolate.

Great for mixing up your hot chocolate. I find the Insta-pot to be a good pressure cooker - no fiddling with the temp on the stove to get the pressure right. It probably works well as a slow cooker, too, but I just haven't tried that.

Great for mixing up your hot chocolate. Susan uses her insta-pot on a regular basis. Makes some things really well, and easily. Very good for ribs, and makes wicked beef dip. She also really likes it for cooking dried beans for various other recipes. We also have a slow cooker that she likes for different things.

My wife got a Foreman grill many years back that she put on a shelf after about a year and a half. I tried it a couple of years ago and now I use it and she doesn't. It's a great way to make burgers and grill fish.

I forgot to mention that we also have a pressure cooker. Not really needed in Tucson, but it was a good thing to have when we lived at an altitude. 4,800 feet.
So, Flake, what's the advantage of a Foreman grill when we can grill outside any time of the year?

"So, Flake, what's the advantage of a Foreman grill when we can grill outside any time of the year?"
I'm not sure there is a significant advantage, Hobson. We don't have an outside grill. One possible advantage that occurs to me is temperature control. I heat the grill before the burgers go on and they're perfectly done in four minutes and fifteen seconds, every time.
