Marty's is the easiest, most straightforward. Wet the sponge, wring it out. Put it in the case.
Oasis -- says it has crystals. They're not evident, but the fact that the sock collapses as the water leaves shows the device is working. I don't like that it catches on the strings when pulling it out.
Planet Waves -- is slick and doesn't catch on the strings but the sponge resists getting saturated (takes a long time to get water in it). But after a week the sponge is dry and like a board, thus showing that it too is working.
None of the guitars have cracked so they must be working.

This reminds me of Podium tales. During the freezing, very dry winter months we would take turns on the weekend to go in and fill the store humidifiers. And this may be a myth, but years ago they allegedly poured water on the old, thin carpeted floor for the weekend humidification needs. Marty probably knows if this is true.

Living in a place with fairly unvarying humidity, I can say I’ve never had to use one. Most folks here wouldn’t know what one was.

Oasis case humidifiers or Marty-ish soap dish humidifiers. I sometimes use one that goes between the strings if the guitar is sitting out but I never use those in the case. I used to use little clay pot things and, a very long time ago, 1/2 an apple in a mesh bag—might have been a piece of nylon stocking.

But that habit of just pouring a few gallons of water on the carpet led to mildew in the carpet and black mold behind the paneling. When I got there I explained that the humidity needed to be as consistent as possible the way they were doing it it was spiking the humidity up and down. David Roos who had worked there for years tried to tell them that but the management and staff at that time wouldn't listen. So when Jeff bought the place those panels and carpet got changed and larger humidifiers were purchased. The main display room got closed in with French doors and isolated from the entry area.

I just dip my guitars in the pool once a week.
In reality the Florida humidity has made humidifiers unnecessary for me.

I humidify the whole house, and especially my office/music room. Never gets under 40%. In heavy winter there's always condensation on the windows.

My guitars sit out on a stand. They sound better dry, and I have yet had any problems with cracking, knock on wood.

I follow ePaul's lead on this one. I make sure I'm well-hydrated with the good stuff, and then I don't care about humidity.

To be honest, something I rarely am, I think many people over- humidify their guitars. Use common sense & you’ll be fine.

I use homemade Marty-style soap-dish/O-cello sponge humidifiers in the cases, fastened with hook-and-loop fasteners and a drop of glue. They need to be re-moistened about every five days. Works well, low-budget solution. I also keep one digital and one analog hygrometer in the room, calibrated. They are usually within 2 cents of each other.
