I've been listening to Martin Taylor since he was part of Grappelli's group--saw them at Orchestra Hall in 1980, still have the autographed program.
His videos are always worth watching, and the way he talks about making music is engaging. In my semi-obsessive pursuit of "All the Things You Are," I came across this:
In other news, C tested negative for Covid yesterday, but I didn't. Still feels like the ass-end of a bad cold, with lots of fluids changing locations in my head and throat, but so far no worse symptoms beyond impatience.

Morning.
Trying to decide...
- go out bar hopping tonight and celebrate the New Year with whatever crowd I find myself with.
or
- stay home, play some gin rummy with the wife, and celebrate the New Year with a nap.
Decisions, decisions.

Good morning, everyone. I won't feel much nostalgia for 2023. As I'm sure I've mentioned, my wife plays solo handbells. She always agrees to provide the music at the Sunday church service after Christmas. It's probably the most lightly attended service of the year. She'll be playing Christmas music during the offertory and communion. I'll attend. As a bonus our rector is preaching and his sermons are always good. If anybody wants to tune in virtually you can do it here www.facebook.com/allsaintsphx or here www.youtube.com/channel/UCYo9rGAjYu7ljtOkJZikQwg. It'll be at 10:00 AM MST, which I think is 12:00 CDT/1:00 EDT. For Christmas I got a dry mix for making posole so I'll make some this afternoon for dinner. I've made posole several times but this mix obviously produces a different kind. As long as it's edible we'll be fine. If it isn't, we'll suddenly decide to eat out. Have a good day. Wordle 925 3/6* 🟩⬜🟨⬜⬜ 🟩🟩⬜⬜🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Interesting. She starts with all bells laid out as a keyboard but will lay one out of order if she will be picking it up in a beat or two. If she doesn't need it for another 3 beat or more it goes back into keyboard order. Efficient playing.

His videos are always worth watching, and the way he talks about making music is engaging. In my semi-obsessive pursuit of "All the Things You Are," I came across this: Most of his fingerings look do-able, except for a couple of long stretches that my short fat fingers couldn't pull off. I could never do a "C" form chord in the 4th or 5th positions, don't have the hands for it. With that minor alteration, I might be able to make it, but I'm not as enamored with the song as you are. Too many others I still want to accomplish just once before it is all gone. Don't know about the thumb over the top up the neck either. Will you have this ready for the next IJam?

The eggnog has been made, thanks to Robert Atkinson and Aaron Goldfarb, whose recipe I modified. cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020662-classic-eggnogMy modified recipe uses less alcohol and no brandy, mainly because I'd have to buy brandy. Here's my modified recipe, in case you don't want to follow the published recipe in the NYT.
Next on the block is Hoppin' John. The black-eyed peas have soaked overnight, but I'll give them a few more hours before I pull out the Dutch oven and get to work. This year I am using salt bacon like the recipe I'm following calls for - last year I used bacon instead. The Hoppin' John is black-eyed peas and rice, with salt pork, onion, garlic, ham, chicken stock, red-pepper flakes and salt and pepper. Instead of serving with some greens (representing dollar bills), we're having salad. [smear:#107bf5]Gift link to the Hoppin' John recipe[/smear:#eb2e0b:2]

Will you have this ready for the next IJam? I'm fussing over it mostly because it gets called a lot by the jazz guys I sit in with, and it takes some doing to get comfortable with anything in A-flat--and Jerome Kern's tunes often take interesting, unexpected twists, which makes it challenging to wedge the changes into my tiny mind. I do love the tune, though I don't have the pipes to sing it, at least not in the canonical key. Of course, if Joy were interesting in working up a violin arrangement, that would be a different matter altogether. (How does A-flat sit on the fiddle?)

Huh, we got less than an inch of snow overnight, and it needs to be at least an inch for my driveway-clearing service to show up, but the tractor just did, sweet. I wasn't gonna worry about it, as sunshine is predicted for the days ahead and mildish temps, as well.

Have the Chicago crew here and the oldest brought his college girl friend from Virginia. They are out hunting right now. She’s a keeper if it lasts. 2023 with my disruptive tinnitus and Pat’s stroke was was by far the worst year for us ever with the exception of 1994 when our son died. I am committed to recovery and adapting in 2024. I remain optimistic that although things are really tough right now progress has been made and we will slowly accept our new normal and reenter life as fully as possible. I hope I can report back this time next year that all is well. I

I remember this song ALS - in my young times - Canada England Scotland Ireland and my USA. I went to bars in Europe and there were a lot of people sang verses - most of the time they were pretty wrecked/drunk - they do this ALS then they go Barnacle Bill.......
New Year’s quotes can help you celebrate and reminisce, but there’s nothing like singing along with the crowd at midnight to get you in the holiday spirit. Knowing the “Auld Lang Syne” meaning will help you be better prepared to sing it on New Year’s.
Perhaps I'll do this Auld Lang Syne (Fmajor - piano) if I'm still awake Midnight 1/1/2024
Here are the English lyrics to all five verses of Burns’s “Auld Lang Syne.”
FIRST VERSE:
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne?
CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
SECOND VERSE:
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! And surely I’ll buy mine! And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
CHORUS
THIRD VERSE:
We two have run about the slopes, And picked the daisies fine; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, Since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
FOURTH VERSE:
We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.
CHORUS
FIFTH VERSE:
And there’s a hand, my trusty friend! And give me a hand o’ thine! And we’ll take a right good-will draught, For auld lang syne.
The SIXTH VERSE: (somebody will sing a verse - a bar/pub/joint)
