It occurs to me that you, Todd, should look deeply into the Hoyt Axton catalog, as his vocal range and songs are your perfect match.

Village Idiot, I also agree. I first heard of/saw Mr. Axton on WKRP in Cincinnati. Then of course I knew of him from his acting tour-de-force in "Gremlins." As an actor, he was an excellent singer. And Hoyt's mom wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" for Elvis, and gave him the songwriting credit. As a freelance writer she had been written a story about Hank Snow's Jamboree concerts, which had Elvis on ths lineup. She noticed every artist she interviewed talked about fame (and/or women); but Elvis talked about how he hoped he could make enough money to buy his parents a house. When she gave the song to Elvis she told him that it was the song that was going to earn him enough money to get that house.

Hoyt was very cool. I knew his mother wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis but I didn’t know the backstory. Thinking back, it makes sense.
I knew Hoyt slightly back in 1963. We were never close but he was hanging out in Chicago back in 1963. He played at some of the same folk clubs I did, though with much greater success (LOL), and we’d sometimes drink together at a bar on Pearson.
When I first heard him sing Greenback Dollar I thought he had learned it from the Kingston Trio. (I know, right?) He wasn’t a braggadocio or anything and just treated everyone like friends.
